Just throwing this out there to gauge interest on getting some folks together to do some pondskimming in the next week or so in the Crystal Range. I think it would be fun to spend a couple days out there looking for some sweet pondskims, drinking, fishing, and maybe even a few turns.

Last year mmcpheet and I were there on Jun 20-21, here's the TR viewtopic.php?f=5&t=5156&hilit=crystal .

There's more snow this year and being a couple weeks earlier I'm hoping for better conditions. It was a bit of effort to get up Horsetail Falls and out to Aloha so I'm open to the boat taxi route but I could go either way. For the folks interested I'd plan on a good deal of dry trail hiking either way. It should be fun though.

Any interest out there in splitterland???

hmm...when are you thinking? Sounds like fun, I'm locked into a Yosemite hike next wknd though.
Definitely peaked my interest for a trip up to Nor-cal though.

No set date yet mtn and jules but I was hoping sooner than later. If we wait too long the riding may be more of a novelty. The ponds might be bigger though and that's my whole reason for going. :)

As much as I want to go I'm sorta skeptical now based on all the weird weather and rain we've had. I might try to get up for a dayhike tomorrow to scout some stuff out.

The Crystal range trip would surely require at least one overnight and you guys should be warned that there will be at least 4-5 miles of dry trail walking (with overnight and riding gear) each way. I'm torn between going up via Horsetail Falls like we've done in the past or going the boat taxi route. Horsetail is steeper but shorter and gets you closer to Pyramid Peak without walking around Lake Aloha like the boat taxi does. The boat taxi isn't as steep and has a well maintained trail but its longer and puts you on the opposite side of Lake Aloha forcing you to decide between Pyramid or Price.

Decisions decisions.....

Due to some recent events mmcpheet and I have decided to make this trip happen tomorrow. If anyone is interested we are departing from the Horsetail Falls trailhead around noon. Depending on conditions and weather we'll either come out late Saturday or sometime on Sunday.

Jules and bs, if you cant make it this weekend and its worth going back for I could be persuaded to go again in the next couple weeks. if you can get to the trailhead sometime tomorrow afternoon we could adjust our depart time to wait for you as well.

hey chris - can't make it tomorrow (only weekends for me) but BS may be able to. I'll alert him to your updated posting. have fun...

you should set up a ruler like they have for long jumps to see how long you can keep skimming, though this would probably necessitate getting wet.

damn... wish i could make it... but i just put a new engine in my gear-transporter (vw vanagon) and i think it's going to take me most of tomorrow to get the cooling system running right. she just isn't ready to climb echo summit yet. so without jules & her forester it looks like i'm out.

keep us apprised of the conditions--i'd really like to do some desolation backpacking this spring, and i've always wanted to climb up the horseshoe falls "trail".

have fun!!

After several hours and many miles hiking across granite...pondskimming mission accomplished.
