I think this is called a tiff ?

How do you do these type photos??

I don't know how to make those kind of pictures, but that downhill skiing on crosscountry skis in soft boots is the gnar bar!

A friend at work was just explaining this to me yesterday. I have not tried this myself but some of her tele-action shots looked pretty impressive to me.

She, claiming that it's fairly easy, explained it to me like this:

Step 1. Take a "Burst" of shots using a tripod. It's important that the camera doesn't move at all while shooting.

Step 2. In photoshop, use the "Layer Mask" tool to combine the image. Maybe it was "layer merge"(?).

Step 3. Impress your coworkers.

It should be noted that I know next to nothing about proper photography technique or software but her pictures looked comparable to the one you presented. I'm sure other photo editing software can be used in a similar fashion.

Tiff is a format like jpeg, raw, png...etc.

Not sure the official name for this process but would like to learn how to do it in photoshop.

Stagger Lee is right. In Photoshop for example you can put each image on its own layer. The first image would provide the background and the first action frame. For subsequent action frames (layers), you have to mask out everything except for the outline of the figure and any other "action" you want (like flying snow for example). AFAIK there is no automatic process for this, though I'd like to hear otherwise if there is any software (or camera for that matter) which can do this automatically. The way I've done it is to start with the magic wand to get close to the selection you want, then manually refine it.

Some cameras actually have this feature built in. My Nikon D80 does, but i think its limited to 3 shots. I haven't tried it yet mainly because I haven;t felt like lugging my tripod with me.
