hi all,
I will soon buy a split, S-series 2009, and i have a question regarding the voilé crampons, especially on icy traversing, which is a weakness of splitboard.
Is it better to put the crampons fixed on "skis" or mobile with the fix?
For both, is it possible to put the crampons on the fly?
and with spark fix, is it possible to put crampons on the "ski"?

I'm a big guy so I prefer them in fixed. To add, there is rarely a time here when heel lifts aren't up. So I am always preferring the security of full purchase.
It's not too tough to mount the Voile crampon on the fly. I carry the crampons with the long pins on them on the outside of my pack.

is it possible to have fixed crampons with spark fixs? Spark crampons are different than Voilé one.

Voile crampons won't work with Spark bindings. Mr. Chomps crampons look like they *could* be modified to use with Voile slider plates. I think if you just chop down the plastic bar at the front of the crampon to fit in the slider plate, it should work. You probably want to talk to Will to be sure though.

Are you thinking you're going to be using slider plates for now, and eventually get Spark bindings, and want to get crampons that will work with both? In that case I would vote for trying the Mr. Chomps mod, but you might want to get an extra set of those plastic bars from Will. When you use your modded Mr. Chomps with Spark bindings, they would slide around a bit in front with that narrower plastic bar.

Mr. Chomps are way easier to put on/take off than the Voile crampons, and they are actually functional in floating mode with the heel lift up, whereas the Voile ones are only useful in fixed mode if you have the heel lift up.

split.therapy I would love to see a vid of you putting those in on the fly. Not that I don't believe you, I just know if *I* tried to do it on anything but flat ground it would be a comedy, so I'm wondering what the trick is. And often it seems like I'm already in a semi-sketchy place when I decide to put the crampons on, where having to take the binding completely off would suck.

Here's my routine. (I use Mtn.Plates)
1. Swing my pack around and pull off my crampons.
2. I release my binding with my pole handle.
3. Step on the rear puck of my other board for better traction of my skins.
4. Stand board up, remove binding, mount crampon, replace binding, switch pins.
5. Set board down, step on binding/engage crampon in snow, use pole handle to engage binding to boot.
6. Repeat as above.

Only takes about 2-3min. total time for both.
Often times if I think I may have to use my crampons I'll switch the longer pins before I head out for the day.
On side hills I switch my uphill board first.

So, no pb in traversing with Spark fixs and Mr Chomps crampons?

I no longer use the voile plates.. but when I did, I never saw any point to using any pins but the long one's that came with the crampons.. even if I wasn't considering using the crampons themselves, the longer pin seemed much easier to get in and out. Small pins became extras. that's all. carry on

practice it at home, and dial it in before you head to the mountains. There is no need to be unprepared or not ready when you need them . Perfect practice makes Perfect.
