pretty much waiting for corn now... thinking there might be some corn on southern aspects in the whites? -will
i dunno...
sat mar 14
we're literally sitting here tonight, 1030 pm, still debating a run at Oakes in the Whites tomorrow w/ some others. still, i'm afraid we might miss it by just a few degrees. sounds like the solar gain is pretty much there, but the winds and rain crust have not let go of the snowpack yet. even today, high only in mid-teens at 5000' w/ winds 50-70mph sustatined. didn't allow things to soften at all, even w/ bright sun all day.
tomorrow, sunday, LOOKS better, but... sunny again w/ high temps at elevation expected only to be about 25 max, but in the valleys at almost 50. slide for life shit, i'm afraid, especially AM. mandatory ice axe by the sounds. aaaaagggghhhhrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!
long story short, no corn yet i'm afraid, at least high in the whites. i'm sure if we decide not to go tomorrow, there will inevitably be reports of corn.
maybe we should go...
fyi, lower elevation stuff and resort runs are GAME ON w/ sun and warmer temps late morning on.
I've been working all weekend which sucks cause the weather here was great. That does mean that I have Mon-Wed off and am going hiking tomorrow to check on the conditions at the local spot here in NH. Not gonna bring the board as I am gonna bring the dog and attempt to let him off the leash. That way if I spend 3 hours searching for him I don't miss out on riding. I'm gonna ride on Tues if the snow is good. Looks like its gonna be warm and good though. I guess there is 1 advantage to being further south than the good stuff in VT - at least it's been staying fairly warm here in central NH so it's not a constant freeze/thaw state.

at Mansfield both days this weekend
Sat 3/14 sunny, but low temps overnight from friday = firm, with softening conditions throughout the afternoon, S aspects best choice (Spruce).
Sun 3/15 warmer overnight into Sunday, 40 degrees and rising in the sun at 930. Beautiful day. Primo corn harvest. Big BBQ in the lot. Tailgate until 6 pm. Sun stays up over the nose till 530ish now.
happy st. patty's everyone - a guiness and shot of jameson for all...
we held off on heading to whites on sunday due to expected temps at elevation and winds, along w/ a sketchy avy report telling of mandatory crampons and ice axes for any am approach. hit wind gap area (VT) via fc instead, then back across the circ and down bh from ridge. great loop, all day sun. fyi, first time approach on fc was not as skin friendly as we hoped w/ multiple drainage crossings, will prolly approach from eastern slopes via n. duxbury nxt time.
found GREAT corn on SW aspects, took time for turns and some sniffing around which awarded us w/ new found terrain w/ real good springtime potential.
sounds like bolton and others are into a good corn cycle too per twostowe, may have to plan a misty rendevous this week bro. unfort, my schedule today (tues) is tight. got corn turns up here in worcester yesterday afternoon though out in the cow pasture. totally fun...
nxt w/end looks sunny again, more corn and turns anyone??
not sure -- last year it took me like 1.5 hours? Its not a race... I've skinned 15+ miles on the splitty in one day before .. sometimes skinning is as rewarding as riding... -will
I agree but I'm prolly going with some guys that will be hiking so I was thinking about the comparision between the skinning and the hiking. It's been so long since I've been so i guess it's just gonna be a whole new experience. I'm thinking I'll be faster on the skins than I would be hiking.
