THE SPOILED UNDER-30 CROWD!!!
If you are 30 or older you will think this is hilarious!!!!
When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were. When they were growing up; what with walking Twenty-five miles to school every morning uphill... barefoot... BOTH ways Yadda, yadda, yadda. And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in hell I was going to laya bunch of crap like that on kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it! But now that... I'm over the ripe old age of thirty, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in Utopia!
And I hate to say it but you kids today ---- you don't know how good you've got it! I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have The Internet. If we wanted to know something, we had to go to the library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalogue!! There was no email!! We had to actually write somebody a letter, with a pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox and it would take like a week to get there! Stamps were 10 cents! Child Protective Services didn't care if our parents beat us. As a matter of fact, the parents of all my friends also had permission to spank our butts!
No where was safe!
There were no MP3's or Napsters! You wanted to steal music, you had to hitchhike to the record store and take a chance on shoplifting it yourself, and you knew you could go to jail and no one was going to bail you out. Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ'd usually talk over the beginning and messed it all up! There were no CD players! We had tape decks in our car. We'd play our favorite tape and "eject" it when finished and the tape would come undone.'cause that's how we rolled, dig?
We didn't have fancy things like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called they got a busy signal, that's it! And we didn't have fancy Caller ID either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your mom, your boss, your Bookie, your drug dealer, a collections agent, you just didn't know!!! You had to pick it up and take your chances, mister!
We didn't have any fancy Sony Playstation video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like 'Space Invaders' and 'asteroids'. Your guy was a little square! You actually had to use your imagination!! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen forever! And you could never win. The game just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you died! Just like LIFE!
You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! There was no channel surfing! You had to get off your butt and walk over to the TV to change the channel! There was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoonson Saturday Morning. Do you hear what I'm saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little brats!
And we didn't have microwaves, if we wanted to heat something up we had to use the stove ... Imagine that!
That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too easy. You're spoiled. You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1980's or before!

We had to snowboard in Sorrell boots, rain gear and ride on crappy boards.
there is a flip side though:
Kids can't go anywhere by themselves anymore. They can't go riding bikes or skateboard until dark or go play in a creek because some creep will try to abduct them. Parent's can text their kids at any time, they will never be free or independent.
Too funny. I have a lady @ work here that asked if her daughter (16) could babysit my daughter (almost 4). I just laughed because she won't even let her daughter walk 1/2 mile down the street here w/o her. If she can't do that she can't be responsible for another person. hahahaha

This is funny shit--all true. You should see the looks I get when I let my 5 year old ride her bike without a helmet. Breakin the law, Breakin the law My one neighbor thinks I'm cruel for making my dog ride in the back of my truck. I remember riding in the back of my Dad's truck from Merced to Klammoth Falls, Oregon--500 miles or something like that. We were stoked when he'd stop and let us piss on the side of the rode. Sit down, shut up and don't fuck with me.

So much truth in Eco's words - & well the rest of it - funny is always funniest if its got lots of truth.
Yep - ST - just surpassed the 50 benchmark but my new idol is Gary - a guy I met through kiteboarding - 68 & hits the local lift-served 3-4 days/week as an avid race carving boarder then if the wind is up he'll get in a couple of hrs kiteboarding in the afternoon. I haven't talked him into any bc boarding yet but hell - if I can retire at 1/2 his level I'll be happy

Dang Ecobrad, Sounds like you're a Merdead local from way back in the day. Represent!!
All my grandparents were raised around Merdead and come from a long line of hicks. I graduated from Merced High in 91 and left to the Bay Area for college and my 20's. Came back after being gone for 13 years for a great job and so that my kids can grow up near tons of family. All while still relatively close to singletrack and boarding--not close enough so eventually we'll move to the mtns. but great for now.
You must have grown up around here to call it Merdead.

I lived there until I was in 8th grade, when I moved to the Bay Area for high school. Ended up back there every other weekend though, then back in the Valley for college in Davis.
Most of the family core has either passed on or moved. My cousin graduated from Merced High in '88, I think. My dad still lives part-time in Planada with his girlfriend, whose family is from about halfway between Le Grande and Chowchilla.
There is certainly a lot of biking, boating and boarding close by. I sometimes get turned around there since all the fields and dirtjumps that I remember are houses now. Did La Paloma road on the other side of the lake ever get paved? I used to go shooting there with my dad =)
I bet your fam and the locals love your avatar. Just the though of talking about vernal pools with my family is making my tired. Good times, good times.
I was thinking this might be a threadjack, but "Over 30" *is* about when you start saying "I remember when...".

Whose your cousin? Half-way between LeGrand and Chowchilla is acres upon acres of ag. My Dad used to co-own Lockwood Seed and Grain at the end of Minturn Road (which is in-between Le Grand and Chowchilla.
All my old stomping grounds are houses too. Creeks were put underground, trees harvested....
La Paloma is still a gravel road and they actually keep in locked at G st now. I managed to get a key so I go out there to run 3 or 4 days a week. As close to wilderness as we've got around town. I do see some cool wildlife out there though. Especially birds of prey. Here's a picture taken out there last winter. Notice snow capped Yosemite on the horizon.
I can't tell you how many times I've been asked "what's the use of ferry shrimp, you can't even eat them?"
