I like the old way "new" posts were handled. Threads with new posts since the last time I logged in were tagged as "new", but after I logged out everything was tagged as read. Now everything is tagged "new" until I've actually read it. Can I make the default behavior as it was before? Sometimes I'm just not interested in following the discussion of when the momart closes for the season, even though I love you guys (and gals). I'm tired of the threads I'm not looking at staying as "new" all the time.
I did look at the User Control Panel and the FAQ before posting, but couldn't find anything...

I've followed splitboard.com for a long time but only recently became a member so I don't know how the thread markings used to be. The way I view message boards is by clicking the "View New Posts" link. This will show all new posts made to all threads since you last visited. From this list you can simply click into only the threads you've been following, or if something new has appeared you can determine its value by the Thread's title or by clicking into it and reading some of it. Remember which threads you liked and disliked so that the next time you log in you can follow only those topics that are of interest to you.

If you're logged in, there is a "mark forums read" link in the grey bar at the top of the forum but below the "View new posts/View your post links. By selecting it it will mark all the forums read and turn them back to white. If you don't want to mark all the forums as read, you can drill down on each specific forum (blah, blah, blah/Gear, gear, and more gear/Safety Meeting/etc) and select the individual forums.

I see exactly what he means... i have the same issues with the new board...
I log in... read and see all the posts.
I come back and there are orange sub-forum titles lighted up.
I click on "new posts" and then only one or two show up... but somehow, not in all the forums that were lighted up before...
So what i'm thinking is that the "orange" doesn't stand for new... but more like "unread"... so if you don't read it all... those orange flag will stay orange... unless you hit "mark all as read"...
Normally, a message how wasn't read on the last loggin should show forever as orange... maybe it should go to "read" after 1-3 log-in...
I think that changed on the V3 of PHPbb because i never had issues like this with the older version...

these are the only settings I see in the admin panel.
Enable server-side topic marking: Stores read/unread status information in the database rather than a cookie.
I had it as YES before you brought it up, changed it to NO and thought it fixed it. Appears to have fixed it for the most part (after marking all forums read and deleting board cookies) but it still leaves topics that where new but I replied to orange.
Enable topic marking for guests: Stores read/unread status information for guests. If disabled posts are always read for guests.
I have a question along these lines. I see that the orange icon means there are new posts in the topic, but what the heck does it mean when the icon is blinking or has a black dot on it, or has other differences to the straight icon? I've found no explanations so far.

Thanks.
Blinking = hot topics (more then 10 replies)
Black dot = You have replied
Black dot + orange = You have replied and there are new posts following yours.
