Anyone seen the new lappies from Apple?

They use an interesting new construction where the casing is milling from a block of aluminum as oppossed to bends and folds. Super sick.

Somewhat cheesy but interesting PR viddy that shows some of the construction.

My only grip is they no longer offer a matte screen in the Pro. :(

Any other Apple users drooling over these?

I do like the "brick" case but as far as the rest of it I was expecting a lot more updates. Now is a great time to buy a previous generation mac book pro IMO. Too bad I already own one.

samh,
I dig the pic in your link with the zones and gear. I've always wanted to make one of those for a typical daypack/overnight contents. Cool stuff.

jcocci,
Yeah, the construction not the specs is what impresses me the most on the new lappies. That and that I guess I'm just a victim of new Apple product lust. They're good at that! :)

Agreed on previous MBP versions too. I spend about 6hours+ on mine a day. Absolutely love it! 8)

The brand new previous MBPs are $400 off right now and if you have an EDU discount that's another $200. That's less than I spent as an employee!

There's also some good deals on refurbished previous generation ones. Go to the refurb section.

A good review from the guys over at engadget.

They aren't crazy about the glossy-screen-only option either.

For man'f cost reasons, I would expect the case is cast, and then milled to final spec. Either way, Milling is a time-consuming option (= expensive). It will be interesting to see if this construction method lasts, or if they switch back to a more traditional method for future generations. Definitely geek-sexy though. :D

I met a guy on a recent mountain bike ride who was on the mechanical design team for the new MacBook. Pretty sweet machine. We have one at the office. It feels a lot more solid in general than the older ones. Really clean internal design. I LOVE how easy it is to swap out the hard drive! That was a major pain in the ass in earlier models.
