Finally some snow on the ground.

Jay received 8in in the last 48H and should receive more in the coming couple of days. Things above 2500ft should start being rideable... I'll be touring in the Jay area most likely on sunday if temps keep below freezing and snow keeps pounding... If so, i'll have a complete report with detailed pics.

Next week should start with a good snow event also...

rode jay in-bounds yesterday, 6-8" i'd say. a good day overall, no complaints. still picking trails carefully, as many lost ALL coverage last week w/ rains. groomers were nice with good coverage in general, and only a few icy spots.

trails w/ little existing or only new snow were still boney w/ rocks and ice. some glades are close and north aspects have held some snow from last week. had to jump in to see, but ended up being pretty sketchy. d, bj & pass still need snow, no tracks to speak of yet.

colder today, upcoming system looks interesting. could be winter knocking again...

monday 1/15 should be ON, in-bounds at least. will be crowded with holiday skiers though.

first impulse of moderate snow arrived early am today (sunday), 3" new at 1800' base of mt. hunger and still snowing steady. should taper off this afternoon with a lull between next, stronger low riding along the front to arrive late tonight. this system will produce our first big snow event of the season. mountains could easily pick up a foot plus over the next two days, stayed tuned.

snow showers may continue thru the week and it will be COLD. higher elevation north aspects could be good for some turns thru mid-week, but be especially alert for exposed or hidden rocks, trees, etc. there's not much base out there right now.

hiked to 3600' in n ctrl vt and did a split tour around a north aspect this morning during the storm. checked out some short glades and chutes. glades were ride-able, chutes were not. a great day. about 5" new with a fast, sugary top.

split both elmore and jay pass today. this am, elmore had 4" w/ a real good zipper crust but still fun. jay pass was super sweet this afternoon, a good 10" w/ slight crust along w/ 2" more thru today. glad i was riding. took 3 laps, game on for sure. other skiers were out.

another 3-4" over the past couple days, still snowing steady with heavy squalls today and 4"+ new so far. snow machine is now ON at jay w/ forecasted increasing northwest flow and strong orographic lift thru sat night. should give them another 8-12"++ by sun am. yee-haw...

areas north of route 2 now have a decent base in the backcountry (w/ 12-20" at elevation) and we're riding the glades there. central vermont is a bit thin still with barely 8-14" in the bc. buried zipper crust too. if touring to ride, stay high. still running into water at lower elevations.

resorts conditions are getting better, but things are still firm. this new snow will help.

quick update... a significant upslope event materialized for the central greens last night. 12" new at sugarbush early this am. 10" in montpelier with some gusty winds. was DUMPING last night. beautiful snow, get on it.

Went to Gilpin Mountain and Domie's Dome today... Wasn't worth it... Tons of snow... but it was really packed up by the wind... Didn't get much riding done... Mostly bushwacking...

There was a good 20in of fresh snow on top of a soft base. Above 3000ft, it felt more like 24-30in... It was really hard to walk in those conditions... Still lots of stream crossing and open waters at the bottom near the road...

Things are shapping up... Hope it snows this week... I know where i'm going next... But i need a pretty 8in for it to be confortable...

COLD past 5 days. sunday 1/21 was epic, hit the b loaf wldrns, bluebird and no wind.

hit ch on monday 1/22, REAL nice. like butter. thin down low.

little new snow to report but conditions are still nice at elevation, especially north thru east aspects. below 2500', things are still boney and there's now a buried zipper crust about 6-10 inches down.

looking for more snow.

things are starting to get a little played out, but it's still worth the effort for sure. we've got a good 4-6 inches of fluff on top of a 12-24 inch base in general. things are nice for touring, but turns are still pick and choose except way up high.

currently, 2500' and above is definately rideable along spine of greens from lincgp to the canadian boarder. beyond that, it's still pokey.

hit brdgap today down into chitt brk, again 4 inches on top of their base. we were surprised to see such a thin base in central vt compared to a fairly significant base up north... just what i wanted to know. suggesting you stay up around hump, mansfield and jay until more snow arrives.

things have been real nice lately. base depths range from 12-36" from low elevations to highest ridgelines, just enough to keep things buried enough. temps have stayed cold over the past couple weeks and have kept the snowpack dry. new snow every few days at 2-4"+ with each impulse have kept things fresh. plenty of turns to be had.

thank u for all the updates up there. i live in mass. and skeptical on what is going on in upper VT. keep em coming and maybe see you around.
