My husband (pj) and I were trying to decide where to go out for the weekend and Shasta came up. I told him I wasn't sure if I could do it... knowing what a big mountain it is. He then told me to check out this trip report guermo posted on TGR from the following weekend...he knows me well....I was easily convinced.
We were able to drive up the road much further than we expected. After passing many cars (mcpheets subaru?) in the tundra we managed to get to the second to last switch back where we packed up. We were skinning in no time and oddly enough...no mosquitos..?? Image
Before too long we managed to bump into Ed (imagine that! we see him everywhere) and starting wondering if we'd see bcr and mcpheet as well. Pj skinning towards treeline.

Before too long we were setting up camp and admiring the views....and the challenge that awaited us.
Image
We relaxed, enjoyed some food, and swatted the flies and bees for a several hours.

Sunset from camp.

3:30 am arrived quick and as PJ brewed some coffee, we noticed our neighbors skinning off in the distance.
Image
I had never started skinning in the dark before but found it was quite nice expecially with the beautiful sunrise reflecting pink and orange across the mountain. Not to mention how much cooler it was....ahhh :)

Every girl loves pink

and orangish pink...

PJ skinning up as the pink glow fades away.
Image
The heat of the day starting really kickin' in early, the snow was getting mushy and it more difficult to skin...for me anyway
Views looking back

Image
We started booting around 12,200 feet and it was COOKIN'. We were doing pretty good considering the heat but it was definitely slowing me down some and the snow was getting pretty wet. We decided to climb to a little over 13,000 feet. Both of us wanted to reach the summit but we decided the ride down was worth more to us. A hard decision to make. Especially when it looks so close.
Image
Looking up at the summit....so close.....yet so far away.... oh, only about 1,000 feet. It is so deceiving. After booting a little higher we decided it was time............
Image
Me droppin' in. (please ignore the horizon..we managed to mess up just about every riding shot) therefore, it's steeper than it apears. :D
Image
it keeps going and going and going.....my longest run so far. ahhh
Image
pj says-East face like butta
Image
pj comin' atcha
Image
PN likes butta too. Bye bye
Image
The real horizon.oops :?
Image
Looking back up. The glare makes it hard to see the turns. But they were SICKKKK
Image

We got back to camp, packed up and rode out one of the drainages to the road. Tried out some dirt and pinecone riding on the way out too. goodtimes

About 10 minutes down the road we found the truck. An incredible trip! Can't wait to go back and get to the top!

........by the way, this was my first trip report. I really appreciate all of you who post TR's even MORE now. :)

Typical Puff Natie. Suffering, chasing PJ, yet smiling and having a blast.

Great trip report. Bummed I missed Shasta this year.

There's still time Ecobrad. I might not make it in July, but will be there for August and September. I've skied Shasta in every month. The only bad month is October. November has freshies!
Nice TR PN and PJ!

And hopefully not the last! There is something really cool about TRs that aren't filled with testosterone. :)

Great TR Puff Nattie! :thatrocks:
I'm bummed our schedules didn't work out so we could all do this trip together. We only missed each other by one day!

What a cool area huh? We gotta get back there sooner and multiple times next year.

Re the summit.
I'm pretty sure it'll still be there next time. Redemption is sweet.

Re the horizon.
That happens to me all the time too. Most photo editing programs allow you to correct the tilt and crop. You can also play with the brightness/contrast and focus.

I played with a few for ya!

Way to go PN. Bout time you posted a TR. Now you know all the work involved.

BCR - thanks for cropping those pics. I've tried that before but it never seemed to work for me.

Man - what a difference a couple 1000 ft make. We're just gonna have to grow our mtns a little bigger up north. So much mid-June snow! Jealousy besets me.....Great TR!
