original plans to hit the Blackmor area again were tarnished. the road to Hyalite is closed due to excessive partying this time of year and to preserve the road from the frost heaves getting chewed up from driving over them. ...so the Forest Service says

nomad gone crazy; had a 4:30am start in mind (skinning). no thanks. found another buddy to check out the Spanish Peaks and we were off to the Flying D around 7am. saw some buffalo, wolves and some elk on the way in. we weren't sure where we were headed, but we'd figure it out once we could see what was around. well that solves it!

no trail going up, so we improvised. something like this:

first sight at the base after climbing. ok, so we're not lost

lance takes in the views

ok. enough day dreaming. let's drop this bitch

drop in, 2pm. the sun just got off the right side of this line so the corn was timed perfectly. the rest of the run varied with some wet and heavy, breakable kind of crusty "powdery" snow and some more corn. NW exposure

lance shralpin some

sweet run dude. we're still alive. look at that!

someone had once said that they wish there were some mountains around Bozeman that gained elevation similar to the Tetons. well, the Tetons are in a league of their own. we all know that, but here's something comparable; go to these mtns. they climb quick and consistent. plenty of stairway's up around this area to burn the shit out of your legs. nice day for splittin!

wow, very nice, the spanish peaks look sick, I've always wanted to ride them, haven't made it up there yet though. Did you just start at the trailhead there at the end of spanish creek road? how longs the flat approach before you start gaining serious altitude?

Ak, yep. started from the end of the road. we hit the first big mtn on the left once you get into the drainage. a little less than 3 miles on flats carrying all equipment, then about 2-3 climbing up. we saw some other folks who went a little further on the flats and climbed a more open area. our woodsy route looked a little less strenuous, but it was still a burner of a climb.

we started at 7:15am and got to the top about 1:30pm. we rested a few times for probably a combined time of about 30 minutes. 5hrs or so to the top including switching over gear (split, board, crampons). we didn't summit either, as you can see in one of the pics. i would figure another solid half hour to do that.
