As a splitboarder currently living in flatland, U.S.A., I fly frequently to get to snowy locales. I've had increasing difficulty this season getting through airports and TSA with my Snowpulse/Mammut airbag canister this year. Despite lengthy phone calls, proper paperwork, and all the other necessary preparations, my canister just got refused at the Jackson airport. Have previously had success (albeit with a lot of consternation and difficulty) flying out of midwest to Denver and Vancouver, but tried to get through JH today without success.

Anyone else with more trouble than usual recently? For those of us who frequently fly, are we now committed to spending lots of money on daily canister rental rates (if we can find a shop close to our destination)?

(in case you're wondering, of course canister was completely empty, all caps off, proper documentation, and I demonstrated probing the inside of the canister to verify is empty to the TSA agent, which usually helps alleviate any concerns given the small opening. TSA stated no airbag canisters are allowed at all anymore, checked or carry on baggage, unless has big, gaping opening that entire canister inside can be visualized, which aren't made anymore that i'm (or JH folks) aware of)

sorry for the rant. i'm a bit frustrated right now :).

No sh!t - I'd be frustrated too! Sorry to hear.

Guess we have to go and spend thousands on BD's fan packs - when it becomes available

Next time maybe you can try to ship in advance?

That is really weird. Sounds like you made every attempt to resolve the issue before and after. Have you spoken with TSA since? Seems like they would have seen a few of these come through the Jackson airport.

Man that's brutal. I live in the Midwest, so all of my riding revolves around flying too. I've been wanting to get an airbag system but have been worried about problems just like this. Guess I'll be riding without until the fan bags come out AND start dropping in price after the initial hype.

Think about your destination--it's Jackson. How many compressed gas canister totin chucklebrains do you need on a plane to feel unsafe?

The testosterone is bad enough you should cover the Mrs. in shrinkwrap.

Thanks for the heads up.
I'm flying with canisters too this week, though not to Jackson, but to AK.

Forgive my naivete, but what paperwork are you providing?

Bummer

FWIW, I think TSA is somewhat random in interpreting and enforcing these rules. I have heard of friends on the same trip where one's canister flies no problem while another is denied. Definitely seems pre-shipping (ideally to a shop that can refill) is the ideal way to mitigate this issue.

More than one manufacturer is looking at battery powered air packs (at least partially) to address this concern.

There is always a risk that unknowing airline and TSA staff will yank your canister.

The safest way to avoid that is to ship canisters separate and in advance (alongside good chiltepin hot sauce that you can't get up north and that also risks being yanked).
