Thanks, Duane. I tweaked those photos a little on the computer but that's mostly just the beauty of the sunrise from a mountain ridge there. We were on dawn patrol before work so we didn't stop to get any action shots on the descent.

I did decide it was time to buy an SLR to replace my point and shoot though. I opted for a couple year old Panasonic Lumix DMC GF2 (micro four thirds) with a 14-42 mm lens. I'm finding it heavy on the jpg artifacts which is something I was hoping to get away and as such the search continues. Perhaps I just need to bite the bullet and get a D series?

Hebgen's been awesome this season. Forgot to make my "report" last weekend. Big vert, lots of shredding w/ nomad, facets still reactive but not propagating 2' down. Had the place completely to ourselves! Sounds like the "not propagating" part may have changed for a party down there last week.

Down in the Jackson area for the rest of the week. Togwotee today, trenching it, taking care to not bump the sidewall of the skintrack and knock a bunch of snow into my pant vents (at thigh level...!). Nice leg-stretcher tour en route from Billings to Jackson. If anyone down here wants to shred this week, give a holler!

I also toured around in Hyalite Saturday and, I must say, conditions held up nicely on shaded aspects. Dug a few pits and had ECTNs on all three. There is definitely still a weak layer of small facets on a crust about 3 ft down, but it took a ton of force with a shovel sheer to bust the slab loose. A few photos and a rough video below.
Skinning towards the Fat Maid with my non-spillter partners.

Looking good from the top.

A little toe-side reward while avoiding the sluff.

Cut a little soft wind slab loose up top. At about 3:15 you can see some sluff pouring over the left side (after my graceful somersault into the cooler) and can faintly make out the small crown line above. This was anticipated with a little wind loading happening on the ridge.

Got out for a great nine mile tour on Saturday in the Bridger Range (Ross Pass area) with a buddy visiting who was visiting. Snow conditions were stellar and after much on-the-ground analysis and two snowpits we felt comfortable picking a thousand foot avalanche path as our line of descent.

Pit one:
Approx 6,800 ft
NE aspect
dug down approx. 200 cm
ECTX
ice crusts at approx. 45 and 91cm

Pit two:
Approx 8,100 ft
NE aspect
dug down approx. 200 cm
ECTN25
ice crusts at approx. 45 and 91cm

All in all we were out for around six hours under beautiful sunny skies.  I forgot the memory card for my SLR so my apologies for the phone can pics.

Nothing much to report. Spent the week in Jackson riding lots and lots of storm snow and biding time waiting for the alpine to settle down a bit & deep instabilities to quit being "heard from" (story of my season right there). Still, fun turns with Patrick and phenomenal surface conditions.

Nomad looking mighty serious to be throwing such buckets:

...and a backside.

The sun poked out the last couple days of my trip, forcing the classic conundrum. Glad I'm a patient man.

Psyched to continue cranking turns, boofing pillows, and grinding out bigger numbers on the skintrack stairmaster, but really looking forward to strapping on the steel and hitting the alpine steeps soon. Usually have at least a couple of "big lines" under my belt by this time each year. Oh well, can't force it!

Cool to see you young bucks slaying dragons. Good seeing that Nomad character still wanders these parts too. Haven't seen him hopping off a chimney of near vertical exposure lately - is he getting old?
