I am getting a GPS this year, and was wondering if anyone has recommendations on models or brands that they have used? Or more importantly are there any GPS's models that I should avoid??

Any GPS Unit that is small, light weight and shows UTM coordinates. I use a Suunto Ambit GPS watch for this purpose, where I can instantly mark my location unto a topo-map instantly. If the GPS fails at least I know where I am at, rather than blindly trust the GPS. Together a topo map and simple GPS offer all I need to know. More so than just the GPS itself.

I have a Garmin Oregon 600t. It's a touchscreen with preloaded 100k scale Topo features for the US. It is awesome. Very easy to read display, even in bright sunlight, responsive and accurate to touch input, and overall excellent.

I had the earlier version Garmin, the 350t, and the touchscreen on that was terrible.

Old thread, I know. After owning 2 top of the line Garmins I can say I'm with PowRider on this one. Both Garmins malfunctioned in one way or another and one instance actually got me lost somewhere you do not want to be lost.

I sold the damn thing and bought a waterproof/shockproof point and shoot camera with GPS capabilities. All it really gives me is UTM coords and elevation but with a good compass and map that's all I need. I got a panasonic but lots of companies are making them now. Most geocache your photos which is kinda nice for scouting new lines.
