I wouldn't rule yourself out of BC travel in the whites because you lack avy gear. I think most people in the whites lack avy gear. There is a lot of terrain that isn't prone to sliding for various reasons. Proper education will do a lot more for you than avalanche gear, avoiding an avalanche is the best way to stay alive. Even just reading a few books will help. Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain by Bruce Tremper is a good place to start.
This r**n cycle is killing my hopes of getting out soon. Here's hoping the dreaded green color stays off of the weather radar for a while!
