I can get a pair of Ascension Glidelite skins for pretty cheap to go with my new Voile Artisan. Only issue is they're 110mm. Will the 20mm less skin effect traction and sidehilling much? I've never skinned before so I have no point of reference.
Thanks

Yes it will suck.
Additionally trimming instructions tell you to trim so that the metal edges are exposed. In my experience it's better to trim your skins flush with the edge of the board. It give you more traction when side hilling. It's also easier.

Monumentally so.

The more area of skin you have in contact with the snow to spread your weight around on, the better they will grip. As you take your first few flat 'steps' at the trailhead you probably won't think it's so important, but when things steepen up, you sure will! :)

I definitely agree. I accidentally trimmed a pair of skin too much. I was having some traction issues as soon as I started to go up a steep skin track. The price of the skinnier skins seems tempting, but not worth it. I always stick to the 140mm.

You can always split the skin down the middle, sew a loop around the tip clip so they move out laterally and put the skin to the rails. I find this "split" skin to have amazing grip to weight ratio, is faster sliding on the flats ie. better glide, and costs less. YMMV.
