My son has been wanting a split to mess around on in the hills out our front door. He is a smart kid that listens to me and is very enthusiastic about snowboarding. Of course we will take one step at a time and I will always keep him safe in every situation possible. Its just cool to share a passion with him and go play around on the boards, bikes and all we do together. He has been practicing beacon searches with me for fun and caught on quick. Here is a pic of him on the split we built together. pretty getto but it works for playing around in the yard for now.
Epic! probably every snowboarding fathers dream, to still be able to shred it with their kids!
Got out with my boy this weekend on the split. 9 years old and ripping it! it was things he was saying like, I can’t believe how much snow there is already, how much fun he was having and "this must be a magical place" that pretty much sums up the soul of split boarding to me. A very special moment in my life. As a long time ski bum, having kids was not always easy on me. From traveling the world riding pow for years to pushing a stroller around the neighborhood on a POW day, becoming a father took some work. After years of sacrifice, i can now go out and enjoy preseason turns with my son. He is also ripping it on the Mt Bike, BMX racing and moto. I am sure all snowboard dads can relate. I am so grateful for my life and thankful for my children. Best thing in my life by far! Yes i have missed some pow days and trips, but now it’s on! What’s knee deep to me is waste deep to him! He ended the day with "I am so proud of myself" and "that was the most fun i have ever had". This was epic to me! Now we are going to make him a swallowtail or fish split next.

Rughty clearly hasn't toured outside of the US. We have created this term "backcountry" but for most of the rest of the world it's just skiing or snowboarding. what about cross country skiing, snowmobiling, etc... and do you really think taking a kid touring is any more dangerous than letting one loose in the terrain park? plus i've been ducking ropes since I was 10, well before I had any concept of "backcountry". If a parent is willing to invest in a splitboard for a kid i'm sure they are taking the proper steps in educating them. your example of the sawtooth incident is moronic. that's an outlier incident.

A little more from the young ones scene in Australia
Mia (9), Australia's youngest splitboarder atteneded the Mt Hotham Splitfest this year. After a few years of touring on nordic and cross country gear she has seen the light and has been bugging us to get her on a splitboard. We made her a 121 board with custom gear and showed her the ropes at splitfest
A little intro into how the gear works.
Then some skinning lessons.
Some kick turn practice.
Now off to do some riding.
She was able to ride all the runs in the resort so her ability to ride was not in question. Her father attending the days touring (even though he was on tele gear ) would have added some assurance but she handled it all like a seasoned PRO! She was so stoked to be out on a splitboard and I was told she even slept with her board the previous night she loved it so much.
All I can say is I would encourage all those with kids to assess the slopes and keep it easy, which is what most of our hills are. They will thank you for it!
These are the runs we did with Mia and from memory she never fell all day!
If anyone is interested in the Kids hardware I sell the Kid sized slider plates, slider tracks and DIY templates to suit. All instructions as well!
This is Jett, I think he will be on a splitboard next year too after winning loads of prizes, the Further DVD will get him hooked for sure.
Get your kids out there!
