Please like us on facebook to get the most up to date information! http://www.facebook.com/SilvertonSplitfest

Its that time again. We will be putting on the second annual Silverton Splitfest this spring. Few pieces of information for everyone. The event will be held on April 12 -14th this year. We are going to have a similar format to last year, as it seemed to be generally well received. So we will rent out a few houses in Silverton and get catered food through Elevated Fine Foods in Silverton, who did a great job last year feeding a bunch of hungry splitboarders. http://www.elevatedfinefoods.com/ We will also have demos available again, so you can ride next years Venture boards if you would like, as well as get a few more companies to come out and demo.

As a reminder, as most of you will know, this is a backcountry event, so attendees will be responsible for their own safety, and we will have waivers to sign when you get here. We encourage users to take at least level 1 avalanche training prior to the event, but it is not required. Some good classes can be found at http://avyschool.com/. These guys are great and the best in the business, and last year put on a great clinic for attendees of the event.

We have not started registration yet, so no word on costs as of today, but probably won't be much different than the cost last year. We will have options for lodging and just coming and attending the event. We will be capping registration this year around 50 entrants, so when we do open it up, make sure to get in quick.

I will keep information updated on this forum, as well as on http://www.facebook.com/SilvertonSplitfest as we progress. With other questions, you can email SilvertonSplitfest@gmail.com as well.

We just wanted to give you a heads up on when it will be this year, and hope to see some forum members make their way out.

Some common Q&A we get for the Event

1) How do I fly to Silverton? Silverton is located directly between Durango and Montrose, so there are a few options. You can fly into Durango Airport (DRO), or Montrose Region Airport. From there, we have a few locals who may be able to offer a ride to the event. If you are driving, the only way in and out of Silverton is on 550. Coming from the north will bring you through Red Mountain Pass (the Million Dollar Highway), and from the south Coal Bank and Molas Pass. Generally, Red Mountain Pass will close before Molas, but both have been known to be closed for days. In April, the chances of this are small though.

2) Is this an event through Silverton Mountain? No, we are in no way affiliated with Silverton Mountain. The riding will be done in the town of Silverton, which has easy road access to many backcountry areas. On April 12 - 14, Silverton Mountain will be open for unguided skiing if users would like to go.

3) Can I demo any boards? Does it cost any money? Yes, you can demo boards, last year we had a variety of boards and sizes from Venture Snowboards (located right in Silverton), Chimera (Salt Lake), and Winterstick (Telluride). No, it will not cost you any money if you are registered for the event. This is a big thanks to the sponsors who come out. We ask that you treat the boards with respect and bring them back in good shape.

4) What is the deal with food in Silverton? We will have catered food for the event for Friday and Saturday night, but attendees will be responsible for food at other times. There are a few options in town to eat at, and Avalanche Cafe has a pretty mean breakfast burrito. There is also a small grocery store in town for some small food, but it doesn't have a ton, so if you are looking for this, it may be best to do your shopping in Durango or Montrose prior.

5) What avalanche precautions should I take? We expect that everyone attending the event has a Beacon, Shovel, and Probe. If they do not, we can make arrangements to get you a pair, provided you let us know. This may cost additional. We also encourage attendees to know to use your equipment, and if you need a brush up, Silverton Avalanche School will be holding a partner rescue course for attendees. We also encourage attendees to have at least level 1 avalanche certification, but it is not mandatory. Also, we encourage you to make smart decisions, read the Northern San Juan avalanche report. http://avalanche.state.co.us/index.php

6) Is this a guided event? NO, this is not a guided event. Users will be responsible for their own decisions. But, if a guide is needed or wanted (Silverton is a big place), we have contacts and can set up a guide for you, for additional cost.

7) What else will there be to do? Last year, we had a shop tour with Venture, a partner rescue class with Silverton Avalanche School, a slideshow from Jarrett Luttrell, the first splitboarder to ride all the 14ers in Colorado. We also have a raffle and giveaways. Stay tuned with what we have in store this year.

8 ) Is there a limit to entrants? Yes, we will cap the entrants at 50 this year. This is due to the difficult logistics of putting on a backcountry event, and also the fact the San Juans have some of the most complicated avalanche conditions in the country. So less people is good for now. We also like the small town feel of it as well, and it was really well received as a smaller event last year. Once we open registration, make sure to get on board and pay the entrance fees. We will start counting entrants as someone who has paid to come.

Also and update on conditions. The last week has been good for the San Juans, with Wolf Creek picking up about 60" of snow in the past week, and Silverton mountain claiming 50" in the past two weeks. Hopefully El Nino kicks in full force all winter and sets us up nicely for the event.

Happy winter everyone.

Alright everyone, we are opening registration for Silverton Splitfest now! There will be 2 options again, a $170 for people who want lodging, and a $70 option for people who do not want lodging.

Please email us at SilvertonSplitfest@gmail.com and let us know what option you would like. We will give you more information on how to pay. We will be asking for payment via check.

We will be capping the event at 50 attendees, so make sure to register to ensure a spot!

More info:

What does registering for Silverton Splitfest get me?

Everything listed below will be available for attendees. There are two options for attendees. For people who would like lodging included, it is $170 for the weekend. For people who do not want lodging provided, the cost to attend will be $70.

Lodging – 3 nights of lodging is provided through Silverton Property Management. We rent out as many houses as we need for people who want lodging. All houses are within a walking distance of another and the event headquarters. The houses help create a good social atmosphere. If you are coming with your significant other, please let us know, and we can help accommodate that. The lodging costs are competitive with all lodging costs that can be found in Silverton (or cheaper). Lodging is not necessary, and other options can be pointed out, but it is up to the attendee to figure out.
Food – 2 nights of catered food from Elevated Fine Dining, located in Silverton. After a big day on the mountain, good food is always nice to come back to, and Elevated does it right. Dinner will be provided on Friday and Saturday night between 6-7pm. There will be beer available as well from SKA Brewery.
Entertainment and Raffles – All attendees will be registered for the raffle, including a giveaway of a Venture splitboard! Each night, we will have entertainment, which may include slideshows, terrain assessment with Andrew Klotz, of San Juan Mountain guides and author of Cold Smoke, the only guide book for the Silverton area.
Like last year, Silverton Avalanche School will also be doing a partner rescue clinic on Thursday April 11. Take the time to learn valuable information from the best in the business. To register for this, please just let us know through email that you want to be a part of it. No additional cost.
Free Demos – We will have free demos from Venture Snowboards, Chimera Snowboards in Salt Lake City. More potential demos from other companies to follow. To get a demo lined up, letting us know through email what size and model board you are interested in.
Venture Shop Tour – All entrants can participate in the Venture shop tour and get an inside look at the factory and how Venture makes such quality boards. Based right in the backyard of Silverton.

Where does the $ go to? We are not here to make profit from this event. It is an event to get people together and showcase the sport we all love in a great location. Any additional revenue that is gained will be donated to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.

**Note that this i not a guided event and attendees will be responsible for their own safety.
