Snowvols - Just curious how well the Salt Lake avy forecast predicts for the oquirrs and stansbury's. In your experience, is it pretty similar?
When we went out into the Oquirrhs a coulple weeks ago, it was a much more shallow pack. This caused a lot more rounding to occur to the grains. It kept us on our toes and we saw a lot more signs of old avalanches. I am hoping things are different in the Stansburys as I have not been there in the winter time.
Dawn Patrol this morning in LCC. I was worried about the snow being really sun affected due to the direct sun we had most of the day yesterday. I was more than please to find excellent snow for most of my run on SE aspect. It got pretty crusty below about 9k ft. Nice sunrise too.
Headed out to the Deep Creeks for an (sad) attempt at Haystack Peak.
Next Morning we made our way up from camp... When my partner arrived he said that he tweaked his knee skinning up making a kickturn(note: that his skins are way too skinny for his skis)...bummer!! We still tried to push on towards our objective, but my partners paced slowed and as we reached the top of a mellow glade he said his knee was tweaked. Knowing we were already really far out we decided to ski the mellow glade terrain below us and head back to camp. We made it back to camp, he took a couple magic pills, and we started the journey back to the car.
My thoughts were at least with approaching from the west side we had better chances to get some turns back down if we had to bail as opposed to a long slog back out from the east side approach. Although we didn't bag a peak, It was great to check out new terrain and do some winter camping. Considering an injury we were still able to ski 3K of vert, not too bad.
camp, fire, food, rest on our way, looking promising glade run back down from upper bowls...you can see our skintrack going up back down from the ridge towards camp heading back down from camp...about 2 miles of slow cruzing, surreal in such large open terrain some sick terrain right above where we parked(Rocky Peak)...good thing it was dark when we arrived, this may have been too tempting Sick terrain with Haystack and Ibapah peaks in the background...Pretty sure thats all indian land though

Nice work fellas I'll post some more pics Tuesday from our journey out west. I'm heading back there early am Monday if anyone is interested. NOT going for any big one and done objectives, just hunting pow and lots of fun shots, will be a full day. Leavin SL @ 5am
Not Utah, but Northeast Nevada isn't that far away. Made the drive from SLC on Friday to check out some of the mountain ranges in the Silver State. Pretty good snowpack, didn't note any recent avalanches, and incredible terrain. Wish I'd had a sled or more time to set up a base camp closer to the good zones.
Good trips, dudes. I was in Eastern Nevada too this weekend, I'll put up pics as soon as I get them. Claymond, if I am correct about which drainage you are in, I think those sled tracks are in the wilderness, no? Maybe send a pic to the Humboldt-Toiyabe NF.

Not sure if it's wilderness or not, I didn't see a sign heading up that indicated it was wilderness. Regardless, they hadn't tracked up any slopes, and I don't see a reason to contact the Forest Service
I love seeing exploratory tours in the ranges west of here, nice everybody! I think Matt P also just rode a shot out on the NV/UT border that I've been coveting. We only drove a mile from the local bagel shop yesterday to go touring. Mid-elevation sheltered still has good snow but there's misc crusts all over. The visibility was great - 100+ mile view. Here's some shots:
