We are trying to plan a trip to Norway this april we are looking at Tromso and Lyngen areas. Has anyone been there/live there? Have any advice/comments? Also lodging looks pretty pricey anyone know of cheap lodging or homestays?

I know a guy that lives in Lyngen now, but there is not a lot of snow right now so he doesn't have a lot to say about it yet.

Have you looked at Narvik and Riksgränsen too?

You should check out, Kvaløya just west of tromsø. Real nice touring and alot to choose from. A couple mountains on Kvaløya : Buren, steinskarstind, storsteinstind, skitentind, litjeblåman, storstolpan, holländaren, middagstind and then some

Most of my touring up in northen Norway have been on this island, the mountains is around 800-1300meters so not as high as in Lyngen but still the view is fantastic.

Norway is expensive,but there are ways to work around it.

Rental cars are really expensive from the usual big players like Avis.try to find a local rent a wreck etc. some garages rent out used cars.

Food. Eating out is really expensive and generally the level of restaurants is lower than it should be. probably good seafood up in the north though.Do self catering!! If you look at the price tag,and think like a student in the grocery store it isnt too bad!

Accomodation. Hotels are really expensive.The answer here is camping cabins(campinghytte).theyre roadside all over Norway and can be really cheap! they always have a stove for cooking,and most of them have a basic selection of pans/cutlery.these campinghytte will also be used by freeriders if its close to good mountains,so you will run into likeminded people.

An example. bring your own linen and endclean yourself!

Another great tip is to use the cabin system of the norwegian touristassociation.cheap and deep in the mountains (like hut touring in rogers pass etc.)

We have great mountains here.usually snow isnt a problem.

There are several ski related blogs with trip reports/route descriptions from the area, in norwegian, but should be helpful even with google translate.

If you're staying around Tromsø, you could do day trips to Kvaløya, Lyngen, Tamok or mountains inbetween.

We are considering/looking into RV rentals. We have found some in Oslo but don't know if makes sense to drive up to tromso. I have emailed a few companies that seem based out of tromso but have not heard back. Any ideas about RV rentals in tromso and if that even makes sense.

Did a quick google search and found these RV rentals:

http://essotromso.no/bobilutleie/ - Tromsø gas station with RV rental. Seems to have forgotten April in their price list, but 6990 NOK pr week October-Mars.

I've seen several RVs with skiers earlier seasons, and also nicer looking then what those to sites have to offer, so it may be other rentals in the area.

If it's possible, you could fly to Rovaniemi, Finland. Rental RV's are cheaper, also food and gas. It takes about 7 hours to drive to Lyngen.

Quick search gave couple rental companies. Prices are from 500€/week.

I lived in Norway for a year and a half, most of it as a student with a scholarship, so there's definetely ways to survive.

the cheapest company to rent a car is www.rent-a-wreck.no
the cars are fine, we had an accident that destroyed pretty much the car and we didn't have to deal with many issues... watch out with norwegians roads, they re dangerous!
They should have an office in Tromso, as far as I remember.

don't underestimate distances aswell... it takes a long time to drive short distances, and roads might be closed in winter. Just take it easy if you have to take a 3hours de-tour because the mountain road you were trying to go is closed.

what's the price difference from an RV to a car? because you can get pretty cheap accomodation almost everywhere, so I'm not sure if it's really worth to get an RV.

I'm going to be in the Tromso/Lyngen area for touring, sightseeing, and bank-breaking drinking from May 14 through May 18. Too bad I won't be on the same timeline KCasey!

Kind of a cross-post from my thread on TGR, but if anyone else has more info on the following, I'd love to hear it:

• Partners - anyone wanna tour? I'll be on a splitboard and will have glacier gear (and very little ice skills)
• Lodging - If Magic Mountain Lodge is good enough for Frandsson, it's probably good enough for me, but I'm sure there are other options ... I don't want to camp since I'll be on a boat for a week after being in Lyngen/Tromso
• Conditions - No idea what is going on out there, and there is probably only 1 guy in Norway who uses SnowPilot ...
• Routes - It can't hurt to ask - I'm not looking for second descent beta, just any recommendations for established routes and nice lines that won't piss off the locals, or websites etc
• Any other beta of relevance

I'll probably spend a day in Tromso, then a few days around Lygen, then a day back in Tromso. I'll have a rental car duing this time ... and then flying to Svalbard on 19 May for sick touring (woohoo thanks Doug Stoup).

Flying straight from LYR to OSL to head over to the Bergen International Festival from 28 May to 1 June before flying back to Los Estados Unidos! Who wants to get their party on?

We booked our flights and are RV. So we will be in tromso april 11th and leaving the area april 30th If anyone is local and wants to tour with us or grab a beer that'd be great!!!
