I ask because I'm trying to avoid my skier friends feeling like disabled backcountry shredders. Is there a way for skiers to perform at a snowboarder's level or are they limited by the simple bio-dynamics of skiing?

You're talking about going down, right?

Ever seen a freeski movie? (All I Can, etc) It's not the tool, it's the rider that limits it.
Many of my skier friends are amazingly fast downhill...
Still, I agree, it is easier to ride deep snow on a snowboard than on slim AT skis. Here in Europe most AT skiers tend to buy the slimmest skis only, limiting their downhill ability drastically.
Put them on (still lightweight) skis with e.g. 90-105mm waist and tip-rocker, and their riding will change... ...and so will the fun they have, when going down.

FAT skis. they will have way more fun, and be able to ride like a snowboarder. At least 120 mm waist, preferably with at least a rocker tip. And whatever you do, do not be willing to tour with a telemarker who has skinny skis!
