I got to watch a heli do this at the point of Moab a few years back to install "visibility balls" for aircraft on the powerlines over the river. Guy would hang off the side of the platform and put the ball on the line. They'd fly from downtown Moab somewhere with a ball and then pull up right next to the wires over the river. Then back to town, get another ball, fly back out to the point. The balls are way bigger (lol) than it seems, about 6-8 feet in diameter. Really cool, I watched install about ten of them. I got some photos but they don't really capture the situation like the video.

Tex, are we going to see a tr with your heli's this winter?
I hope so. I had to send my auto pilot system back to have it recalibrated. It was making the heli buck like a bronco even in a hover. Really screwed up the video quality. Hope to get it back soon. Then I need a puk ? You know-plastic sled so I can get all the crap needed to the location to shoot.
This shit does blow you away. After 14 years as a stations electrician and cable jointer, I stumble into a job jointing with a line contractor here in Vancouver BC. After four years of having my arm twisted to be be trained as a PLT (Power Line Technician) I finally said yes.
I said yes after spending some time helping for these guys for the this type of "bare hand" work. Working around/under heli's, watching what these guys do, the danger that is ever so present at every moment, it's very real. I realize that this work is right up my alley.
And having been working around high voltage for my whole career, the safety aspect runs parallel with back county safety. I apply what I have learn't with on the job risk analysis, and apply it to pre and during trip planing. It helps me to open my eyes to the very real danger splitboarding can get you into.
