I'm tentative for a Sunday day trip, bit Saturday is pre-halloween festivities which means I'll be hungover Sunday and won't want to go. Still pieceing my Avy kit (no beacon yet), but I did Muir via Paradise in August. Should be a good trip for you guys.
I'd like to hit Muir the week following though weather depending. Let me know how this week goes!
d.benton_alabama and I hit up Heliotrope saturday. There were definitely some lessons learned. To start: If you have never boarded in deep snow, dont try on a rainy day. If Saign stumbles upon this thread, I admit, you were 100% right. Getting up wasn't the problem, but getting down was damn near impossible for me.
All and all, the trip went well. We got our foot in the door, put in 2000 ft of vert on a skin track and got to see what some west coast snow is all about. Next trip coming soon, but probably to somewhere where we can board before hiking in so far. Ill get the video posted sometime soon!

I'm glad you guys got out. Learning to ride powder just takes practice, especially if it is heavy. Get some hot laps in at a resort on a pow day, and it'll start to click.
That is the plan. I don't regret going because we gained a lot of important backcountry experience. Tour to ride mode change overs, skinning technique, graceful falling and how to handle all the people who are on the way up beside me laughing at me . I might get another BC trip in before the resorts but I understand its mostly for exercise and experience than fun.
For the record, I never doubted your advice, I just needed to get out there and give it a try for myself.
And on the bright side, I wasnt the dumb*** who decided they could make it up on skis with regular downhill bindings. That title belongs to a friend who claimed to be experienced in the back country. I think he quickly learned that riding the expert lift up and hiking 10 minutes doesnt count as backcountry! At least I can say I was prepared with the right equipment. I stayed warm and mostly dry!

For sure, and keep getting out. That will get your muscles in shape and experience is the best teacher. Once your legs are used to skinning, the riding will become much easier as well. Its just much easier to learn to ride when your riding a lift and get so many more runs with rest in between as opposed to having to climb to ride.

Yeah cliff had a hell of a time and I was impressed to see how he skinned with resort ski bindings.. nevertheless I knew instantly he was gonna be in for it lol. It was alot of fun and a ton of experience. Ive been up here for a few years so the pow was easy for me. Just the skin up and lower angled descents in the deep heavy snow made for some frustration. Especially while riding a unfamiliar board... Can't wait.to get my baby back
