Anything you're climbing with Verts you're not going to be able to climb with regular snowshoes. The hinge on a regular snowshoe decreases your leverage and even if you tried to side hill it, you'd quickly wash out. If you have a short, steep shot, then boot packing it makes sense. I you have a long sustained slope that is deep, then there is no substitute for the Verts and worth the weight.
I was sad to sell my original pair that I mounted up with a hacked clicker system back in the day, but stoked Sparks brought them back. Of course I haven't used them since there was no snow in Tahoe last year, but I'm still happy I have them. I sure as hell could've used them on Shasta last month in the baking snow.
