I have an unusual but important request of my fellow splitters of the Sierra Nevada and Cascade Mountains of California and Oregon:

***If you encounter foxes (the animals, not the ladies) while traveling in the alpine or sub-alpine terrain of the Sierra Nevada or Cascade Mountains of California or Oregon, please take a photograph of it and email that to me (tmckinnon at biologicaldiversity dot org) with the location of where that photograph was taken.***

Context:

If you see a fox in the alpine or sub-alpine, generally above around 6000 ft or so, it is very likely a Sierra Nevada red fox -- the only montane red fox native to the Sierra Nevada and Cascade Mountains south of the Columbia River. With fewer than 50 individuals left in only two known relict populations, it is among the most rare and critically-endangered mammals in North America. It would help recovery efforts immensely to know whether and where additional fox populations might be, and since they're elusive alpine creatures, and since surveys are expensive and few and far between, the split-boarding community is in a unique position to help.

On it. I saw a fox a few days ago on Mt Diablo at approximately 3200'. while on a bike ride. I also heard one whilst climbing the 4th of July Chutes in Blackwood Canyon, North Lake Tahoe a few weeks ago on Memorial Day.

This aint the sierras or cascades , its Yukon canada, but this strange fox walked right up to me and was acting sorta funny; way tooo friendly. Just thought you would appreciate the photo.

I saw one crossing Hwy 395 just south of the June Lake Junction early one morning a few weeks ago. Elevation about 7800 ft.

Probably too old to be helpful, but 5 years ago I saw what I thought was a coyote, but in retrospect was probably a fox, running down one of the chutes out by Greenstone lake (here's the old TR). Here's a pic:



The coolest animal sighting I've had on the eastside was a bighorn sheep running right up Hwy 120 one evening, I think it might have been on that same trip where I saw the fox. Thought it was a deer at first, till I saw the round horns.
