if you have an idea, you patent it and sell it to others. voile bought the splitboard patent/license back in the later 90's....so they charge out the license. just like mervin, they charge out the license for their invention, mag. it allows them the decision as well to decide what kind of product reps their companies. it's all written in the us patent agreement law stuff.
look for new companies this year for sure, and adjustments to the current ones. i'm pretty excited actually.
Are you saying you know for sure that Voile charges a patent fee both for the act of splitting a board in two as well as for their binding interface? Or just one of those two inventions? It would be interesting to know for sure, if you have any beta.
I have not gone through USPO, however, i have never heard that Voile have tried to enforce a patent on splitboards (as opposed to their binding interface). I have also heard a rumor that their insert pattern is patented, but a (brief) look at the USPO did not back that up.
Anyone know for sure, or are we all speculating here?
i read the uspo some time ago, and found it vaguely unvague (heh) regarding whether or not includes both. i know the interface is for sure, and by the sounds of it, it may be that the "splitboard" is actually under patent law. maybe Dave at Voile could clarify this?
at any rate, i don't really care, everyone should get a piece of the pie if they've worked for it.
I've determined that I will be in Phoenix for work in two weeks so I'm just going to have a 166 shipped to the REI store there. I'll see how the Mojo works for a season before pulling the trigger on something significantly more expensive.
In case you give a hoot, i think that was the right call. Snowboards, skateboards, surfboards....the shortest one you can still rip on is the funnest, IMO.
