Quick poll for the informed splitters on board here: In your experience are most split lengths given by mfgs. from tip to tip in a straight line or along the base a la surfboard style?

scoob: in my experience most manufacturers use the material length, that is, the length of the board as if it was flattened out (or the board outline as laid out flat before camber/rocker is applied).

This is a good question.
I would say the measurement is along the base from tip to tail
Same with surfboards.

but

Had an argument at a surf comp a few years back with a judge.
All longboards must be longer than 9'1.
He measured from tip to tail in a straight line on the deck side and "not" on the deck contour.
His explanation was;
"length is the shortest distance between two points"
Wouldn't allow me to ride the board.

Maybe a manufacture can chime in?

Cheers

Material length.
There is also 4mm added when you attach the edge so if you dont account for that your 170cm cut base will end up 170.4cm when finished.
At the end of the day it means nothing, 1cm, 2cm, even 5cm means next to nothing to me, people over think snowboard length more than anything else I have encountered before.

Less about length
More on surface area!

Come on Bob, 170cm

We all know you want to say 186.4

I try to moderate my behaviour in public firstlight.
We both know I ride a 3.5m long splitboard and have a very thick beard

Thanks for the responses guys. I also learned to surf shape before snowboard build and I was wondering if most companies were talking tip to tip. I also don't really think of a board as shorter or longer until its a full 8-10 cm different.
