i'm posting this as i have been reading lots of material regarding the recent avy deaths- inbounds and slackcountry- in colorado and utah:

as unpopular it sounds, fact is that 100% safety can never be achieved- not with bombs, ski cuts, nor knowledge and experience! instead, some thoughts:
<> ski patrol has an incredibly tough spot managing their inbound avy terrain. pressure is up ultimately from the consumer who expects that the steep'n'deep is open all the time. so next time you're grumpy about terrain not being open after a good dump, remember this.
<> ski patrol furhtermore has a tough job because the pressure of management who wants the terrain accessible to the public and even more, wants it accessible before the other resorts; money rules.
<> resorts should devote more resources in managing avalanche terrain before it becomes a problem: dealing with that weak layer when it start building up or better yet, trying to prevent it from building up by "pre-event bombing" and compaction strategies. having said all that, 100% safety does not exist!
<> consumers need to educate themselves about avalanches and start using that "thing" located between your ears: your brain, common sense, is your best defense dealing with avalanche hazard. http://www.avtraining.org (for colorado: http://www.alpineworldascents.com).
<> consumers need to change their "someone else is responsible" attitude- 100% safety doesn't exist and the mountain, who is truly the one responsible, can't be sued.
