sounds like a classic case of blue bird fever.

"talked very briefly about the snow and safety at the top. Checking the area, we didn’t see any visible signs of instability or recent activity, and it was mentioned that the slope had been skied recently."

not really sure what "checking the area" means, but id wager a guess that it included looking at the line and assuring oneself you're making the right decision.
