We are heading South.
Image

Our destination is just 45 minutes to the East, but we are heading South because one of us (okay me) forgot to load the splitboards in the car. Somewhere in the haze of ditching work, dodging traffic, meeting patroller420 at the airport, renting PMBs, sorting gear, shopping for groceries, and generally spazzing out, I forgot to load these most important pieces of equipment. So we drive south.

At 4:30 Friday morning, we finally arrive.

Stoked!

This trip was born from equal parts desperation and luck. p420 decided that he didn't give a sh*t if there was no snow in the Sierra. He was going to get some turns even if it meant driving 9 hours to Kirkwood and riding the same patch of fake snow all weekend. Anyone else up for it?

I signed on & so did powderjunkie, but not for Kirkwood and not for The Sierra Nevada. The Southern Cascades had at least a little snow.

And then the forecast changed from month after month of nothing, to maybe something, to actual weather.

Friday morning we got two hours of crap sleep in the car before waking up to overcast skies and three inches of fresh cold snow. We made fire and water and soup and we set up camp. Finally, just after noon, we got started.

Yeah! First turns of the season! Only took until December 15!

p420, stoked, tired, & relieved. The interminable wait was finally over.

Referring, of course, to the MSR stove.

Saturday morning was very cold.

We met up with King powderjunkie, who totally ruled.
Image

PJ was our gracious host. He convinced us to come up North and then stoked us with beta for Friday. On Saturday he took us on a tour of the mountain and we climbed a maze of little ridgelets to look for powder stashes. A raging wind and icy conditions kept us off the upper mountain.

And within 5 minutes of coming down the mountain he was frying apple-chicken sausage for us on the tailgate of his truck.

King PJ and p420 can cook a damn good meal.

We woke up Sunday to a winter wonderland.

And we went right to work.

Thanks for a great trip Storn and PJ. It was nice to start the season in such a nice area. Now I can visit my folks in Texas with a grin on my face. I also discovered something

KS. I would have but I don't think those guys like you.

SF and P420 - it was my pleasure showing you the goods and cooking for ya.

SF forgot to mention several other fiasco's during the weekend.
1. P420 forgets to shut SF's car door as we leave on the tour. I forgot my shades so I go back to the truck and see the door open and the alarm sounding off, waking up other campers.
2. I set the propane camp stove on fire.
3. The one death gully I say we need to avoid, we end up in and have to boot out of it. Good thing they are wearing PMB to kick steps for me. (KS and Fassnor will remember this gully from last year  )

Nice *ass** shot! :P

I forgot about the propane fiasco! No pictures of that one as we were all too busy scrambling for cover.

I didn't forget about the death gully, though. I guess the drop in is just too tempting...

The only reason they like you is that you cook for them. You're such a whore. 8)

Great TR! So psyched you guys made the effort. Was that a fumerole in the one picture or P420 hiding in a snow cave? Seriously though, good stuff!

KS - You're totally welcome to come along next time. How is your bearnaise sauce recipe? :P Come to think of it, maybe we should invite Fassnor instead.
