Affix-You shouldn't have any trouble getting a teaching job but you'll definetly pay more for housing. I'm probable biased, being a Californian native and all, but it's worth the high cost of living. Last weekend when those guys were killing those amazing lines, I was near the beach mountain biking sick redwood forest singletrack. There's been many a weekend I've mtb/surfed on Sat., gone to a concert Sat. night in SF, and boarded on Sun.

cool pics MT.
Sunday was fun (new line) but the snow was getting cooked.
We probably would have got better snow with you but with the early morning snow flurries, having a closer drive, and being tired from Saturday we pulled the plug.

Rents in ca can differ greatly by region. I'm not sure the kinda of place your looking for but I'll give you super ruff estimates on a two bedroom 1.5 bath kinda place. Rember you generally make more here as well. My sister teaches 1st grade and makes ~55-60k
Tahoe (20 minutes to trailhead)-$1,000 (tougher to find work)
Sac./foothill area (3/4-2 hours to 7-8k feet)-$1,000
SF Bay Area/Santa Cruz (3-3.5 hours to 7-8k feet)-$1,500
Central Valley/foothills (1-2 hrs to 7-8k feet)-$800
I'm not sure about LA rents. If I could find a job and convince my wife, I'd move to the eastside of the Sierra in a heartbeat. Not crowded and relatively cheap. Check it out.
Dude, mtb in the redwoods is the shit. One of the trails I ride often is appropriately named Ewok Village.
Headed out for a Ralston-Echo run this morning, not expecting it to heat up so quickly. Hike up was a pain, and the south facing ramp up Ralston crapped out by 9:30 or so, slowing us down a bunch. Some *huge* slabs along the north face of the Ralston ridge that looked a few days old, but we still played it safe. Hike up Echo was even worse, with sun beating down and iceballs falling from the trees. Snow was variable off ralston, with some good stuff up high quickly getting heavy. Met up with another crew atop echo and rode some more heavy stuff on the northeast face.

looking back at ralston. if you look closely you can see a crown underneath the peak above the rock band, as well as in the upper left of the photo (older, covered slide)
