A couple of weeks ago, I decided with my skier buddy Gil to check out the powder dumped on Mt Hood by the latest storm. My wife took my 4WD to work so we rode up to the Timberline lodge (5900ft) on Gil's convertible mustang with no chains. It was a hell of a ride. I am glad he grew up in the French Alps driving small European cars on the snow.
We started our randonee at 8am.
Here's a view of the mountain from the Timberline lodge parking lot:
After 2 hours and a half of skinning we finally reached Illumination rock (~9500ft). We could see Hood's summit a couple thousand feet above.
We met a couple of Gil's friends: Daren and Michael.
They dropped on the north face with all it's crevasses ...
... and traversed to climb Leuthold couloir.
Gil watched them traverse ...
... while I was eating
We then climbed Illumination Saddle ...
... and shredded the powder for 3500ft ...
... to paradise park
We then spent the rest of the day there protected from the wind
It got really warm and we had to avoid some steep slopes where the sun started some sluffs.
By the end of the day, we were happy and surprised that we met only 2 other groups touring the south face of Hood.
Here's a picture of Gil at 4:30pm. Illumination Saddle is on the left and Crater Rock and the summit are on the right in the background.

I'm pretty sure they would be dropping in on the WEST side not the N. Side to traverse to Luethoulds. The crevasses on the Reid are pretty much non-existant right now. Killer photos, really good snow.
Thanks for the correction jlag. Leuthold is definitely on the west to north west side
We all live around portland so just send me an email at bennouri@verizon.net if you are in the area and we can hook up.
