I saw a video snow report by Sierra Mtn Guides with Glen Plake taken atop the Dana Plateau on 1/3/12 in which they were skiing powder on what is usually a wind hammered area. This stoked me to go down a couple days later and see for myself. Unfortunately the snow I found was rather sub par. Down low was actually a really good faceted, inversion preserved sugar (to be less than technical). This stuff is gonna make the next storm cycle rather dodgy unfortunately. Up high was the usual Sierra windboard/crust.
I rode Crater's Crest. This line has sort of been a traditional warm up for me for the bigger mountains as it's 4k+ and the closest line you can hit from Reno. I had aspirations for something more spicy but due to lack of partner decided to go with something I'm familiar with. Driving in to Bridgeport that morning my truck thermometer read -17!. It was only about +5 at Twin Lakes however and much warmer higher on the mountain.










This is probably my 5th or 6th time up this mtn and I finally found the most efficient way up it. The lake is 7200 and the top is about 11300.
After 4 hours of skinning you top out and are blown away with this view:


Big slide canyon and the skiers left line I should have rode. I dropped the riders right line which I knew was choked out with debris but retardedly chose anyway.

good to see a report from you, brooks! i always look forward to your TRs as much for the stellar photography as the cool lines. i love the colors in the sunrise shots, the rich contrast in the b&w ones, and the mirror still lake at the end. it all makes me miss the eastern sierra. we've had good weather these past couple weeks for alpine access; i'm getting warmed up too so maybe i can come down this spring and keep up with you!

Looks like a epic solo day. You need to take my old ass up to that area this season
