note: on this trip, no splitboards were used. i figured with the lack of snowpack this spring and still getting out anyway would excuse any indiscretion with posting this TR. plus it was a KILLER day. i know at least some who would appreciate seeing this. anyway... May is the time for the ritual spring hike with my brother. fun waves and warming ocean temps in so-cal(where he lives), and this guy is waxing his SNOWboard? packing crampons and ice axe? yeah, gotta get that one last shot. camping hiking climbing tuolumne meadows and yosemite high country back there we were thinking that a low snow year might make for an easier entrance to solstice we were right the bro ripping 6" deep spring corn surfing it out i think he had fun resting after the run, we see a single skier dropping dana coulior the little dot, top center no problem hiking out with board on the back, this is some epic scenery looking back as we head toward dana plateau then came the gnarliest run of the season. scoping no riding pics. had to focus.the choke was not quite as wide as we thought from the bottom. nose and tail touching rocks on steeps with exposure below kept us on our toes. then out the bottom we had to negotiate runnels that were left from a rock slide earlier or from the day before. check out the shots from before and after. a great finish to the season
this was last wed. 16th. i'm sure solstice will hold up fine. the snow was soft but not punchy. so should keep for a little while longer. i wouldn't go for chute out though, was just barely there last week. can still ride ellery bowl to the bottom, with some melted patches.
