I hadn't planned on doing any local split adventures this winter because I didn't think there would ever be enough snow. Last year I had an epic San G adventure with really good coverage and great snow. I've been fiending for another trip but until last week, I thought it would have to wait until next winter. Big Bear has had a couple of storms this year that sat over the San Bernardino mountains without dropping snow anywhere else. Despite the warm weather, I knew San G had decent coverage higher up, but the long dry approach was not inviting. Right before presidents, 16 inches fell at lake level and I figured it was now or never. I started hiking at 6:30am and ultimately ended up summiting Charleton Peak (slightly south of San G) around noon. I had initially planned on hitting Jepson and then San G from Charleton but the lack of snow higher up on both of them changed my plans and I opted for a descent from Charleton at 10,800. Think up top but after some rock navigating I found a super sweet gully and scored 1500 of socal powder.

Sweet! Way to get after it. It always seems like after I leave an area I learn about all the sweet spots to check out. Lived in SoCal (irvine) for 4 years and never got any backcountry down south.

We got the center chute on Charlton from 3/4 of the way up. Maybe 1000'. It was sweet!
Have to get our permit before hand next time. (LATE START)
Riding 95% to the car was excellent too!

Congratulations! I had lived in big bear 4 yrs ago and always looked at that area. Riding my dirtbike on the 2N10 fire road, you would see some of the amazing topography to ride! But never enough covrage every year. I believe 6yrs ago i was amazed at how much snow a desert can get! And a handful of friends went up w/o me ..i was sad to see the pics, but promised my self one day i would accomplish tackling that area ...
p.s. my better half is from there! So hopefully sooner than later!
