Far from a trip report, here are some split-boarding scenes from the high desert just northeast of Flagstaff - very different terrain than what's often posted on these forums.

We've had about 200% our annual average snowfall for this time of year... Around 45" in town at 7000' - an anomalous La Nina blessing. Even so, the hot southern sun--which made for no gloves-and-t-shirt weather all day today--still leaves the southern exposures bare.

I saw your tracks today coming back from taking my boy and his cousin for their first snowboard experience, they were stoked. Chelo saw your tracks and remarked "I'd love to board that". We may go out and hike black mountain later this week. Great pics...

To my knowledge those cones aren't named, which is good.

Cool. I learned to snowboard with human-powered ascent in Flagstaff some 25 years ago -- back when snowboarding was outlawed at ski areas. Now the Indian-hating Snowbowl bums me out - back into the hills; circles.

Good eye. In the shot of the skis and poles looking off into the desert you're looking at a big-league ecological, climatological and elevation gradient -- something like 25 to 10 " of annual precip difference across a dozen or so miles. C. Hart Merriam at the turn of the century wrote one of the foundational texts on bio-gegraphy based on that very gradient--he postulated on the equivalency of latitudinal to elevation life zones--an idea that continues to underpin bio-geography research today.

Maybe true, but I believe it was a colloquial name. But I think you were further north. I lived in FLG for about 10 years.

nice! i never think there's enough snow to go out there. maybe next time. very different experience than being up on the Peaks.
