So, if you couldn't tell its been blue and stable in Jackson as of late. I got a call from non-mag Van earlier this week about skiing the Ellingwood Couloir. The Ellingwood has been on my list in capital letters for this year so I accepted and we made plans for Saturday. The Ellingwood is roughly 1500ft and pitched at 50 degrees for the entire line. Here are some pictures, hope you enjoy.
This is Van. He is the hero of this TR for leading most of the booter.
The Middle comes into view. This view never gets old. It usually represents the end of the slog into the high peaks.
We ran into fully mature sastrugi at the meadows and decided to put crampons on and boot from the meadows. Van boots up the apron
Van leads the bottom part of the booter.
The clouds moved in for a bit as we reached the Dike Col which signals the top of the Ellingwood. Van drops into the clouds
Before I dropped the clouds around the Grand broke a little letting me take this picture. The Ford is looking fat. Hmmmmm...
The snow was good for most of the couloir with only the very top and bottom being windblown crap. _Aaron_ drops after the first safe zone.
Van was nice enough to take some pictures of me on the way down. Turns out he pretty good with the camera.
Believe it or not, a couple face shots were had. Heres proof. (right side of picture)
The clouds cleared and the Ellingwood showed how truly big and steep she really is.
On the way out we ducked into the Cave Couloir. It was heavily wind affected but still skied ok. Van in the Cave
The ski out always has awesome views
Only one was to end a day like this
Hope you enjoyed. This was my best ski day so far this year.
