Who's using what, what's good, what should I stay away from?

How far out do You want to reach? If You need long range you can get the old Motorola Radius P1225 used for around $100. They are 5 watt radios so expect around 5 miles line of sight. Programing them is in issue though because they are "business radios" but you can get around that by using itinerant frequencies.

I have the Motorolla Talkabout - will run you $100 for the set of two. Convenient size - fits in your hand, waterproof (even float!) with range of about 35 miles (much less in mountain terrain though) and weather channels which is important for alerts about storms and dangerous conditions.
