To follow up on the original post, my first attempt at a time lapse was about 1000 images taken across 10 or so hours -- the Thanksgiving night sky, sunset to moonset, at the bottom of the Grand Canyon.

Despite reading all about video embedding I still can't make it work, so we're stuck with just the link.

Lessons:

1. I think I'd need a better lens with a lower F, or to take longer exposures (and then with my camera rely on a shutterboss and not use aperture priority), to capture lots of detail in a moonless night sky. Given that I don't want to drop cash on a new lens or camera (to get longer than 30' exposures on AP, which is its limit), I'm stuck for the time being. Luckily the moonlit walls and shadows in this case saved the day and kept the scene interesting.

2. Even with a battery pack (running two batteries) I ran out of juice at about 10 hours. Completing this scene to sunrise would have required waking up late to switch out one or both batteries. Exhaustion precluded that here.

3. Shooting medium size jpegs resulted in plenty of resolution and a .mov file that was way too big for any video hosting sites without reducing file size and quality.

4. The possibilities are endless. I'm hooked.
