I'm splitting another board this fall - my last homebrew rotted out at the core, but that hasn't thwarted me from giving the DIY another go.

Sun Valley Ski Tools has been named here as a pretty good supplier of Ptex Tnuts. They are 7mm deep, and use a 6mm screw:

Unfortunately they only sell in 50-packs that cost $70. After shipping, that ends up just about $1.60 a piece. Still a better price than what's been mentioned here in another thread.

I just don't need 50. I figure a bag of 50 will be good for three people:
+8 tnuts for the binding pucks (2-per puck - most of the tensile stress is on the two screws on the inside edge side of the puck)
+6 tnuts for the touring brackets
-0 tnuts for the climbing wires (this seems dumb, there is very little tensile stress on a climbing wire except for when you are lifting it, mainly compression and little bit of shear so I think screws work fine)
=14 total, but you can have 17 and get a few spares.

Who is in for about $27 for a set of 17 tnuts? All I need is two takers! Or if I get five takers I'll order two bags ...

Alternatively, if you know of another supplier that doesn't require a purchase of 50 but also is close to $2 a pop, feel free to post here. That would be a contingency for me.

I'll sell them to you in singles - $1.50 apiece - I've got a couple cases.

Let me know how many you'd like.

Also - it helps to have the specialty bit for drilling the holes. Do you already have it?

Sweet monk! I'll send you a PM. On that other thread earlier in the year, it was you looking for the t-nuts, guess you ended up with a whole horde of them huh?

My friend has a bunch of countersink drills, though I don't know if he has this specific size or not.

Yeah, I found 'em alright - I use them off and on.

I'll give you a couple hints on making them work well in the pm -

Here's a pic of the bit - (cost me around $50) Allows you to set the tnuts in real nice-like. I'll loan it to you for a six-pack.

Let me just say the people at SunValleySkiTools are AWESOME!!

Hey Monk,
I'd be interested in some of those t-nuts as well.
That's a pretty schnazzy looking bit you got there. Does the shoulder on that thing just end up butting up against the base, keeping the depth of cut consistent?

Hey nerka -

right, the big part of the bit is a stopper, so the depth of the countersink is always right on. It's pretty handy.

pm sent.

welllll ... I'm out in San Diego with fam for Thanksgiving.
But week after Turkey Day is when I'm planning on splitting my board with a buddy, and his old board too.

It's a multi-day process since sealing the core takes overnight, so probably marking, cutting, and sealing on the first day, drilling and some setup on the 2nd day, and finishing touches (waxing and tuning) on the third day. We'll be at my buddy's apartment in Berkeley.

And if things go to plan, I'll have the bit pictured in this thread for sweeeeet tnut action, but I won't be laying up any inside edges. Monk makes it look like art, and from me it would be a hackjob. That, and it's probably a real bitch with Burton boards because of the binding inserts. Fug it I say, I'll deal with split decision crampons for places I need an extra edge.

^^ Monk, bigdood lives about 45 minutes from me. We may be able to do all our boards together, but if not I can definitely hand off the bit to him.

Like Schralph said, we're pretty close.

Question: how many t-nuts do I need if I want to mount my board w/ the pucks (i.e. I don't want to be stuck on one stance). Assuming it's the 24 that Voile uses on their split, plus the others for the various hooks?
