THE WEATHER PATTERN IS EXPECTED TO CHANGE MONDAY AS A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM FROM THE GULF OF ALASKA APPROACHES THE WEST COAST. THIS SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO BRING COOLER TEMPERATURES AND SIGNIFICANT PRECIPITATION ALONG WITH GUSTY WINDS THROUGH MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK. PRECIPITATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN MONDAY AFTERNOON ALONG THE COASTAL RANGE AND SPREAD ACROSS INTERIOR NORTHERN CALIFORNIA BY TUESDAY MORNING. PRECIPITATION IS LIKELY ON TUESDAY AND WILL LINGER INTO AT LEAST WEDNESDAY. STRONG DYNAMICS ALONG WITH DECENT MOISTURE WITH THIS SYSTEM COULD BRING SIGNIFICANT PRECIPITATION TO NORTHERN CALIFORNIA. SNOW LEVELS ARE EXPECTED TO BE AROUND 7000 TO 8000 FEET TUESDAY AND THEN DROP TO AROUND 6000 TO 7000 FEET ON WEDNESDAY.

This morning I clicked on the Matterhorn area on the Noaa site and this was forecast it gave me for 12,100 feet:

Today: Snow. The snow could be heavy at times. High near 30. Very windy, with a south wind between 40 and 45 mph, with gusts as high as 70 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 18 to 24 inches possible.

Tonight: Snow. The snow could be heavy at times. Low around 20. Very windy, with a southwest wind between 45 and 50 mph, with gusts as high as 75 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 31 to 37 inches possible.

In the Mammoth area we found LOTS of rain damage up to 11,000 feet. Above that the snow had come in wet and windy so not a powdery treat up high either. We arrived to find an icy and highly polished slope, but with some time and heat we somehow harvested October corn.

Seriously fun day yesterday. Nothing like riding in sunglasses on Oct 15th, but i must do a better job of applying sunscreen to my face :nononno:

Rain damage up to 11k? Wow. It's too bad the storm came in so warm. Near my house in Santa Cruz we got about 11 inches of rain in a day. http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstat ... span=month

All I could think was, "At even 10:1 ratio of snow......"

10-29 A little higher there are some rideable snarbles

If you don't mind the loooooooooong dirt hike to get to it...and stick to the slopes that are getting direct sunlight, you can scrounge up a few buttery early season corn turns.

Spent some time playing (sans board and sans camera) around the Sisters (Carson Pass) yesterday. Snow has retreated a lot from Snobro's TR.

Just wanted to share that there is a lot of faceted snow on the north facing slopes. This is no surprise as the snow in those areas is pretty shallow and temps are cold. Some striated grains were visible to the naked eye. If anyone is on or near similar slopes in the next couple of weeks, might be worth it to poke around, even just with a hand pit.

Hopefully we will get some serious Sierra snow soon and this obvious sugar snow will become buried and harder to observe.

BTW, Nice effort Buffy on finding something sorta rideable.

Poked around on Carson Pass today. Found very thin conditions. Skinning was a pretty noisy.

Just above the old road leading from Red Lake, we encountered lots of loud whumpfing and some shooting cracks which propagated from about 20 feet away.

Digging down we found a few cms of ice with a layer of facets on top, with about 30-50 cms of new snow sitting on that.

Also saw BCR and crew's tracks from a few days ago, I should have snapped a pic, but it was impressive how shredded out that island of snow was.
