I've never been to either place, but really want to move out to one of the two this winter. Is Baker the no brainer, or is Alpental worth checking out too? Fun steep terrain and backcountry access are probably things I value the most.

If you are going to move for it Baker is the no-brainer. You could even live in Bellingham, a cool little college town. Check out Crystal while you're living out there as well.

Why not live halfway between the two? Sample the goods at both then....even if they suck...

I'd be asking yourself if you want to live in bellingham or in the seattle area if your interested in those two ski areas. Not much of a resort thing going on out here. Better to go where the snow and temps are if you ride the wire.

Thanks for all the info everyone. Does anyone have a good word about Crystal Mountain? And just for everyone's information, Jackson and the entire greater yellowstone ecosystem suck as well.

Word on the street is that Crystal is out. Oxy and teke surfing are in.
The bc around Crystal is as limitless as the imagination. It also has a ton of terrain that can be accessed off the lifts and they never enforce beacon, shovel, probe or partner rule so you can pretty much roam. To access bc off lifts at Baker, you will need the gear. Sometimes you have to have the gear just to be able to ride down the resort runs. Yeah it gets that stupid deep here where patrols go skiing to look for tracks that abruptly end. Sometimes someone is buried down there about 10 feet.
Alpy is worth checking out. Especially midweek. On a weekend powday you may get stuck waiting 1-2 hours on 2 to get to the top. And if they open the upper and lower traverses your in luck. Tons of steep terrain with cliffs everywhere. Bc around here is very unforgiving, just like Baker.
Stevens has tons of bc right across the street but driving on 2 with all the rednecks on redbull and meth is getting old.
Most of my friends that have moved to Baker never come back. Something about that place that just sucks you in.
Pm me if you want more beta.

I am buzzed, and don't know how I got here. but that is some funny shit.
When they say they are cracking down on drunk driving and SPEEDERS on highway 2, they aren't talking aobut how fast you drive your car..... seriously.
They did do a bunch of work adding the centerline rumble strip, and more refelctors this summer. Might shake a few of the tired drivers awake and cause a couple less slow downs on the way back. If it is tht bad, you can always stop on by and have a brew...
So Nick,,, did you decide where yare going this winter yet?
