Yeah - especially hippy skiers!! :P

BCR, You may not be interested in getting into the storage space biz, but have you worked the numbers to see if its doable? That seems to be an workable business model for biglines.

Server space is cheap these days. My hosting service sells a 100 GB hosting package for $6.95/ month. It could draw all sorts of traffic for people that want to post pictures, but that is a whole new line of business.

Have you looked into Google Adsense? You become a content partner for google and they post targeted ads on your site and pay you a cut of the revenue it generates. I have no idea how much $$ is in it, but it's found money. And I think there are other ad brokers out there that you can work with instead of having to drum up individual site sponsors. I have a friend who makes a few grand a month running porn related ads.

Yo yo gimpy, winter is coming mang!!! 8)

SF,
I've stayed away from the google ads but its definitely something I'll be adding with the new upgrades. Re the storage space biz. It doesn't really spark my interest too much. Nor does a membership fee, jimw. They aren't bad ideas by any means, I'd just need to give it a lot more thought.

Questions for SF:
1 gig of storage space for $6.95? That's pretty amazing. What is the bandwidth limit that comes with? Who is the host?

Questions for everyone else:
What is it that you like about being able to upload your pics here as opposed to biglines.com? You still have to go through the upload process, what difference does it make if it's here or somewhere else?

No, that's 100 gig of storage space and 1000 gig of bandwidth for $6.95/mo. It's the terabyte package at globat. I'm sure you can find other similar products out there too. Storage is cheap these days.

By the way, storage space isn't something that I'm really all that interested in for myself. Maybe it would be helpful for those people who have so much trouble posting or don't want to bother with biglines.

Well, you don't have to go to navigate between multiple sites for one thing. More important is what the actual uploading process is. I think you could make it a lot quicker than biglines for example. If it were significantly easier to post pics here I think people would be interested, but that would probably involve someone setting up some software on the server side. On the other hand, if it were the same number of steps to post pics as biglines and other sites, then you're right, there probably wouldn't be much point in that case.

Gotcha jim, thanks for your input! 8)

ps. have you noticed it has gotten a little easier at biglines? You used to have to write in each picture's description field but now you can duplicate the first picture field. Definitely speeds up the process. :)

I'm with JimW, we don't need any place for the hate to start flowin', like the Padded Room, Dark Room, whatever. All the hate on TGR is why I hardly ever check them out. There are at least a half million places on the web for this, already. This is what I really like about splitboard.com, nearly everyone seems cool, level headed, like we're all just comrades, and no one gets too harsh on another. Not even the soft boot vs. hardboot war! :x

And a user gallery would be cool!

My 2cents.

Check out mountainproject.com if you haven't already. It's one of the best climbing websites I've found. Litteraly an online guidebook to thousands of routes. Tons of climbing info for many different areas. If we had a database of snow conditions and info on different lines and trips in different areas it would be benneficial. Plus you can check all recent posts on one page under comments. My point is that if this site were similar to this one it might produce a little more growth since the layout is so user friendly. Might just be overkill though cause there are way more climbers than splitters... PS. Thanks BCR for your hard work and dedication to this site!
