How/where can you find out whether or not Onion Valley road is open? I've looked online and searched the forum and haven't found any info. Many thanks.

Dan

hmm...last time I found out a highway patrol pulled me over, he kindly let me know the road was open. I suggest another method of finding out though.

Would you mind updating this thread if you find the info?
Anyone know if the road is plowed to Whitney portal campground?

Road is closed @ Sardine something. Pretty far down still.

Mt. Whitney Portal is closed at the first large switchback... :?:
How far down is that?

That *sounds* bad, but as it turns out, that would give you just enough road to do the long-format descent of Sardine Canyon back to the car...

The usual trick (run a shuttle, one car up top, one car at the Sardine Canyon mining road ''intersection'') isn't going to work, but on the other hand you would be looking at 5000' of vertical once you start descending from Kearsarge.

This weekend should be very warm in the Owens River Valley so a lot more snow may melt out as the week(end) progresses. Personally I am now thinking of hitting Sardine as a day trip on Saturday!

My bad, I think I meant Seven Pines. Had to look back @ the map. It's a ways down the hill still.

The road is plowed all the way to the parking lot. There is a closed sign down by Gray's Mdws. campgrounds, but it is safe to drive around it. 4/13 I drove all the way up and on the 14th I ran into a Mt Whitney District ranger who I will not name up there skiing and this person said not a word about our vehicles being there. But if you get stuck up there with the sign still posted, don't expect the Government to pull you out!
