I also thought the article was a dis-service. By the time you mess with switching over and racking the skis, you could have a split converted. It might be quicker in perfect conditions, but how often do you have that. Strong wind with a board on your back is a nightmare. I actually got picked up by the wind once in early season when I had the sail on my back. I weigh over 200lbs. It was hellish hiking in that. It's much better on a split. That article sure didn't make me want to go out and get short ski's for the approach.
the article sucked, agreed, but approach skis are just fine for a lot of stuff, just not the Karhus. I split my time btwn my approach and my split most winters and they both have plusses and minuses.
if you're yo-yoing all day, the split changeover gets to be a drag 10+ times a day in my mind. I have a pack that I modified a bit and my change over from board to approach w/ mittens on is WAY quicker than my changeover w/ my split and my hands are warm and I dont have to deal w/ skins and cold fingers in gloves, etc.
now on longer tours, who wants the extra weight on your back? and getting into the pack is easier, etc.
