I missed this last night. Does anyone know where to get video recaps of these events? I tried the nbcolympic.com site but the videos don't play for me, just an Xterra commercial every time.

To me it is easy.

If getting air and riding switch is part of your regular routine then softboots are the way to go.

If climbing/skinning as fast as possible and having the ability to hold in edge in ski mode on hard traverses is key then hard boots are the way to go.

As for crampon use, I know many folks that ride strap bindings in modified PMB's and are very happy.

And then there is the Avy question, hardboots are easier to release in case of a slide. But avoiding slides in the first place should be the main focus IMHO.

Watching hard booter jump makes me laugh every time.

Soon one of the boot makers is going to make a softboot that works with crampons, has a Vibram sole and skins better. Pair those with C60's Then this whole argument will die.

yeah, that's what I figured. the only problem is that nothing plays after the commercial, and for every video I tried on that site it did the same thing.

I was just amazed that at the top level of the sport there's no real agreement on the best equiptment setup. There were all sorts of boards, bindings and stance angles out there. If you asked me yesterday and I would have just assumed that the alpine setup would smoke softboots. It seemed like the hardbooters were able to carve low in the turns to cut the distance around the corners while the softbooters were driving way up high on the berms and pushing off the wall. The latter seems funner to me...

I've never had the chance to watch boardercross before and it was a really fun event.

On another subject, do you think it is in the rules that they have to wear baggy clothes? Or is is just a matter of time before they start showing off their junk in those downhill bodysuits?

SOFTBOOTS for obious reasons. boardercross consists of riding over features and obstacles which are found in freestyle terrain parks. if you can ride hardboots on this stuff, great, but if you want the flexibility which can easier accomodate the variability of a boardercross course then softboots are the way to go.

although, whenever i step into a gate with someone rocking hardboots, i know i have to step it up a notch. how about the wax they all must've been using? ......since it was sort of a wax race too. Cera F? i'd like to see the hardbooters hit a technical course with some rails or jibs thrown in the mix. the xgames course a couple of years ago had an enormous amount of whoops in it. hardboots would suck for that. it varies with the course and personal preferences i think, more than anything else. here's the bottom line:

COURSE IS CLEAR, RACERS READY..... GO!

Be honest with yourself: there is no way your gonna release toe or heel bails in a slide, period. First instinct is gonna be to ride out of it, if that fails you'll be stuck with the board unless by miracle it gets ripped off.

No advantage either way.
