Hei!

We are coming to North America 8.1-29.1.2014 and we are wondering what could be good place to start road trip. USA or Canada? Is it too early to start from USA? Is it too early to start from California? We try to find small ski centers, we don`t want to go in big crowded places. I know you guys are not weather gods, but any information would help!

Thanks!

I would probably suggest Canada since the Sierras haven't seen much snow in January over the past couple years.

What's up Juha. California is hard to predict, but in the Pacific Northwest (Washington/Oregon/Idaho/British Columbia) we always have stuff to ride by January 8. If in doubt, get up high on a volcano. Have a great trip!

True, but even with no snowfall in January last year, there was blower pow to be ridden much of the month due to frigid temps. Only once in my eleven years in Tahoe has there been no snow in Jan. Some years it's been good pow, some years Juneuary brings corn. But if you have the time and are not focused solely on riding, there's lots of Cali worth seeing on your way to other spots. Unless you come during holidays here, there's plenty of quality spots without crowds, both ski areas and backcountry.
Hard to go wrong with BC, though. If you can swing it, just book a trip and a rental car that gets good mileage and go where the pow is.

If I were planning a trip based on a trend I would have to agree with rughty. I would plan to stay north of the Sierras for Jan and hit the Sierras in Feb/Mar. I always get pumped with the Dec storms and then Jan hits and 90% of the storms get pushed north in Jan. Last years freezing temps were a godsend and unusually cold. I believe several records were set. I remember driving to Truckee at -12 degrees..

If you do make it in Jan I hope the weather breaks the trend for you. If not as fustercluck said there is plenty of good riding to be had.

Please go to Canada, and while there, compel the Canadians to invade and take over the U.S.

Thanks.

I think Canada is the right call for January. In the PNW we enjoy the same stable high pressure trend in January. It can make for spectacular winter climbing but less than awesome snowboarding. February and March are usually pretty epic though.

No matter where you are it's hit or miss anytime of year. No votes for Colorado yet and I'm not going to endorse it. But if you do end up here hit me up. There is always pow to be found. + weed is legal and cheap for down days :doobie:

After such a long journey I would hate to get skunked. So

Go to british Columbia.

If you can afford it go first to Utah then Colorado and end it in British Columbia

Thank you for help! You guys rock!

We decided to land in Calgary. So we start from there and see where the snow is. If it is in Alberta so we stay there. If not, we head to west or south to Utah. We try to find some small ski resorts and good powder!

If you have some hints to us, we are listening. Or if you want to meet or something just let me know ;)

Thanks again!

Happy turns!

Join parks canada and make a reservation for one of their huts along Rodgers pass. Great huts. Stove, heater and an outhouse.

Mike Melton, Me and Kyle Miller hit up the Asulkan and it was a blast

Just head west from Alberta towards Banff
