I have been using an extra Karakoram clip in the center of the board on my DIY board as well as the T.Rice I have had for the last 2 years. I also always use the pin between the touring brackets to add tort ional stiffness. I think the pin has more support.
I call it the sheer effect. I have posted a few things about this a few times. I now use small S.S overlapping tabs to keep the 2 halves from separating even on my new Jones solution. I posted some pics on a DIY Skunk Ape thread here a while back if interested in checking it out. I am not at my computer right now so I cant attach a pic.
The S.S tubing or pin I use through the touring bracket is just a piece of stainless tubing I scraped up from work. It works great and is light weight. I can find the exact size if anyone is interested. I think its 3/8ths"
I don’t like that sheer effect and have some ideas about how to stop it completely, without adding much weight. For now the tubing has the most effective performance.

I'm suggesting that you actually do a comparison, for the benefit of the rest of us! Especially since you said it's so easy to get material for a pin, and you're a board builder and eager to modify your boards but most folks aren't gonna drill holes in their boards just to test out a theory.
I suspect that there is not much difference between the two methods in practice, but I could be wrong. I've used the pin a bit, and it definitely seemed to help in the steep and icy shit that I inevitably end up in when I thought it was gonna be pow. It seems that in some ways it could be better because there is effectively more overlap of the board halves vs the 1/2" from the split hooks. The one issue I ran into was that the torque of the pin on the bushings in the LT brackets caused them to loosen. Might not be an issue with brass bushings.
Ah I gotcha! I was just trying to make sure people didn't see this post as a comparison, or saying one is better than the other. My hesitation with the pin is the pin bending under heavy and un-planned stress, or damaging/loosening of the touring bracket. In the past I have experimented with different attachment methods on the touring brackets (heli coils) and had the brackets pull off while touring. After walking back, I personally don't want to add even a hint of the possibility of damaging or tweaking my touring brackets! haha
With that said, I do not have any issues doing a direct comparison test. My team mate just got the same deck that I am riding for next season (the only difference is the graphic). If I can convince him not to do the extra hook straight away, we can do a comparison between the two methods. I suspect that the performance part will be very similar, but of course, nothing shows that better than a test!
Also if anyone missed it, the pin size is 3/8 and FirstLight (company and username) does sell the pins ready to use

Pins sizes vary between the Voile and Spark touring hardware ever so slightly. The binding pins are the same for both but when putting through all four holes there is an issue. Cheers
