The season has started here in the Wasatch (slowly- come on Ullr and bring the snow!), and we are gearing up for the 10th Annual Wasatch Powder Keg Ski Mountaineering race. This year we have changed the race format to a three day event, beginning with a sprint race Friday night before packet pickup and racer meeting. This will be a one hour event, run in heats, and is a blast for spectators to watch, and the whole event unfolds visibly from the start line. We then have the traditional individual race Saturday in Brighton Ski area and the backcountry periphery. New this year is the technical teams race, which features racers in teams of two, and will include technical climbs and descents, and a longer course with more vertical gain. We also have a great BBQ after the saturday and Sunday races, and after the Saturday race we will have beacon search contests, demos, a raffle, and clinics by racers for those new to the scene. We have race, rec, heavy metal, and split board divisions, so everyone is welcome and encouraged to join!
Friday, March 8: Evening Sprint race. 5:30 PM at Brighton Ski Resort Saturday, March 9: Wasatch Powder Keg individual race. Brighton Ski resort, 6:30 AM Sunday, March 10: Technical Teams Race, Brighton Ski Resort, 6:30 AM
We have also started the Citizen series races- which take place Tuesday nights at Brighton Ski resort and are fun midweek casual races if you want to come out and get some exercise. Everyone is welcome, and we usually end up at Molly Greens for food and libations after the race. Come on out!
Is there really a separate splitboard division this year? I thought they eliminated it for good for the sake of standardizing with other races. If so, which course will the splitboard division use?
