just bustin' your balls rayray.
i can see the desire to kill these guys, esp. if you have kids or pets, but there are usually volunteers that will pick them up ALIVE and release them at your enemies house.
you should make some gaiters out of the skin, or maybe a headband.
Rattle snakes are a part of life for most areas in the Western states. Plenty around Colorado. For the most part I find that just leaving them alone works fine, but they are certainly a threat to pets and kids, not too mention adults. If I found one in my garage, you can bet it would have a similar look to the one pictured above.

I did plan on eating it, but I mangled the meat during the incident. Also the skin. Next time I will consider that before I make my two by four do its magic

Eat it anyway. I used to kill snakes with rocks and still eat them. It's way radder when you kill it yourself. The meat is separated from the viscera (unless you tore the membrane) and should still be good. I never ended up damaging a body that badly.

His makes three votes
But seriously, be sure to properly dispose of the head. (i.e. cut it off, thoroughly mangle it with you 2x4; like pulverize the bones kind of 'mangle') Bury it if you want. The when the fangs are still connected to the venom sacks, they still pose a threat until all the flesh has completely decomposed. If you bury the body as-is, years later, people might step it or kids may dig it up. If you throw it out as-is, the trash-man may apply pressure to the side of the bag and the bones could puncture the bag, his leather gloves and his skin.
