It looks like there is a separate strap with a metal clamp for carrying the board vertically. It does vertical ski carry which I like, but an option to carry the board also would be great.

Correct. You can carry your board vertically, similar as with any other snowboard backpack.

I've got the 30L Snowpulse backpack and have carried my board quite often.

You can also carry your split skis horizontal, and A framed.

It holds good, I am only considering some reinforcement where snowboard edge is in contact with straps.
